Watching Point Pleasant on Chiller and baking a ham for lunch today. My husband and The Girl went to church. I stayed home because I had to cook the ham and he didn't tell me we were going this morning so I hadn't showered or washed my hair and had no clothes ready. Excuses, I know, but valid considerations for me.

I just got off the phone with my friend whose having problems with her teen-age daughter. She's looking for "solutions" to her daughter's behavior.

I don't quite understand. Children do as they are told by their parents and well, that's it. No negotiation, promises, begging, etc. I'm afraid my advice wasn't taken well.

I felt this same way, but I outlined my last story, and it all came together.

Note, I make a very very sparse outline, and I too, never really know what magic is going to erupt from the writing. I might know where I'm going, but I rarely know how I'm going to get there.

Watching Mythbusters. There's some commercial on trying to sell life insurance where the guy's adding up the total for a funeral. Of course it's an outrageous amount. The thing is, almost everything but the actual burial is optional. There's no reason to buy the most expensive vault or coffin. What are you going to do? Dig it up and look at it now and then? And the limousine. Who the heck cares? Drive your own car. There's no need for a limo unless you just want to play Mafia Funeral. When my parents died, they tried to sell us all this stuff and I said the same thing. My mother was cremated so that took care of pretty much everything. Just dig a hole in her family plot and drop the container in. She didn't want a 'viewing' or tons of flowers or even a ceremony. She said she didn't want people looking at her that she couldn't look back at. She also said there was no need for flowers. She'd be dead and couldn't appreciate them. Give her flowers while she's alive to enjoy them. And she said a ceremony was useless. SHe was already dead--nothing the preacher said would change anything. Daddy did have a funeral, but not an elaborate one. He got a decent coffin and a vault up to code. Otherwise, I didn't go in for all that elaborate stuff. If people couldn't visit him and see about him while he was alive, I wasn't going to let them assuage their guilt by letting them put on a big show after he was dead.

But that's just me.

^^ done, and done. The one I just watched was the most poorly done of the three.

I don't know what I'll be doing, (other than waiting for the Kennedy Center Honors to come on - Eddie Vedder is gonna be on, I think) but it sounds like the rocker dudes across the way (who always smile politely at me when we meet at the mailboxes) are getting ready to have an awesome time.

And weird.... the dock on my mac, it has a cool "reflective" surface, and it also reflects what I am typing in the quick reply box! Now that is a full effect!

I was rejoicing earlier because I managed to convince my cat to relocate to the bottom portion of my legs, instead of further up where she usually sleeps, because of the laptop. She took the hint on her own, and though I forcibly moved her the first time, the second time she came up to the new spot all on her own.

However, it may turn out to be a phyrric victory, as I think she put my legs to sleep from the knees down.

I'm reading a small town's Rosh Hashanah Machzor from 1273. It's amazing how the prayers are virtually the exact same ones we say now. You'd think there would be some differences given the fact that each community wrote up their own machzorim. Before they were written up, the prayers were almost all oral tradition. Just another example of oral traditions staying virtually undiluted.
