I haven't seen a Merry Christmas thread yet this year, so I thought I would start one. (I will be gone for the lion's share of the month and will not get to say Merry Christmas when the time comes)

Whatever you celebrate at this time of year, I wish you and yours the very best.

Thank you to AW for another great year of writing advice and writing friendships. I never stop learning while I'm here and I never stop laughing.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS!
HAPPY CHANUKAH/HANUKKAH!
HAPPY WINTER SOLSTICE!
HAPPY KWANZAA!

May the season find you filled with JOY!

Happy Holidays to all of my wonderful friends here at AW.

To KTC, may your Christmas, though away from home be blessed. To make things less traumatic for you, I've come up with a list of things to pack that to give you a feeling of home while you are in Africa.

1. One of Frannie's chew toys (You may want to dry it out before packing it)
2. Frannie's blanket.
3. Ziplock bag of your favorite Christmas candy (if not PB M&M's will do)
4. Photo of lovely family.
5. Screen shot of AW Forums home page.

Anyone else have suggestions?

Happy Holidays, my mentor, maybe they be filled with joy and wonder. And we look to see you return safely home to Canada and AW.

I was trying to figure out how to sneak France on in my carry on...but no go. I'm resigned to the fact that I will have to miss her. )-; (I know she'll miss me like crazy, too...that makes me even sadder. She follows me around the house even. Le sigh.)

Exactly. So don't put up a picture that only reflects one. Snow and holiday stuff is very friendly to all beliefs and doesn't make anyone feel uncomfortable. Jews shouldn't have to look at Jesus, and Xtians shouldn't have to look at a menorah.

The picture changes periodically.

I don't subscribe to any religion, yet none of their displays of celebrating and honoring a holiday have ever offended me. I grew up Christian, and it never once bothered me to see a beautiful menorah. It's all in the same spirit of this time of year. The Jewish friends I have don't mind nativity scenes and Christmas trees. Just because they don't believe something doesn't mean they'll take offense to someone else displaying their beliefs.

Anyhoo, KTC, have a wonderful trip and a very happy holiday season!

And happy holidays to all my lovely AWers!

Happy Holidays. Is there any way we can get rid of the Jesus picture at the top of the site? It's a little disconcerting to a non-believer.
You'll have to talk to Mac about that. And if it bothers you so much, you can set your browser so that it blocks the ads that appear in the banner.

Okay. I'm going to say this only once, so please listen: Whatever your religion, try, with all of your might, to refrain from taking on the persecuted role and spoiling for a fight when folks are merely offering simple sentiments for the holidays. If that's your intention, you can try to express your dismay in the Politics forum, but it won't be tolerated in this room.

Thank you.

I didn't realise it changes. I still don't think anyone should have to look at a picture that reflects another religion if it makes them uncomfortable, but it's easy enough to hit the page down button. I think I'll survive.

I don't want a fight. I just didn't want to start another thread. I didn't realise people would be so up in arms about it, honestly. It's not THAT big a deal to me. It's not about persecution, it's about respect. Everyone is telling me to be tolerant, but that's my entire point. I wouldn't want a picture of a menorah up there either.

Anyway, it's not worth the hassle. I'd rather just say happy holidays and move on if that's okay.

Anyway, it's not worth the hassle. Clearly you felt it was worth the hassle to pick a fight on a simple thread intended to just wish us all a Happy Holiday because Kevin is going away for three weeks to Kenya and although he's happy and thrilled for his opportunity, he's going to miss us like crazy.

I'd rather just say happy holidays and move on if that's okay. You should have done so in the first place.

When my kids were little they got to see Santa on the firetruck go slowly by and he'd hand out bags of oranges and candy. I wonder if they still do that.

Not at a tourist. Any old tourist might be from Canada. He should bean a random African kid with it and run (naturally, also while yelling "Snowball fight!"). That's the Canadian way. And he'd win for sure.

My best advice--and serious advice at that: get a new journal--a brand spanking new one that's bound in a nice cover (mine has magnets in it for an automatic close) and a new, really nice writing pen that ONLY writes in/on/around/through the new journal. Then set aside a block of time every day to write of your day--your impressions, what you did, what you thought, what was exciting and new and fun or even what you miss about home.

It works for me. I have the journals I wrote on my first trips to Europe as a kid--the earliest from when I was eight--and I still go to those journals for reference or even just to trigger memories. :)

I'm so jealous of you Kevin. The best Christmas present ever is an adventure.

Be safe, KevinTC, and well done hitting the road!

Hope everyone's having a stress free shopping season. There's always a lot of antagonism and stress in the air this time of year - not even Hannukah, or rather December 24 ;) but the whole lead in from Black Friday on. Take it easy and remember what the holidays are really all about...seeing your friends drink too much at holiday parties.

I want to wish everyone a pleasant December, I would have wished you a pleasant November, but no one asked... and I'd like to wish this Kevin person whom I do not know (but have my suspicions) a very nice trip to Kenya.

Wow, That wasn't as hard as I thought.

Exactly. So don't put up a picture that only reflects one. Snow and holiday stuff is very friendly to all beliefs and doesn't make anyone feel uncomfortable. Jews shouldn't have to look at Jesus, and Xtians shouldn't have to look at a menorah.

It's a piece of Renaissance art; maybe it could be looked at in that light? Plus, there's the fact that Christ is a Jew.
