I had to drive to the country for work today, and was surprised to see beautiful patterns painted on several barns along the way. When I got home and googled, I discovered they're called barn quilts. I never knew such things existed!

They're sure nicer to look at than the billboards along the interstate highways!

Apparently it began with an Ohio woman named Donna Sue Groves, a fifth generation quilter, to honor her mother in 2001. After that, friends and neighbors decided to paint barns throughout the county, creating a "trail of quilt barns". Now there are more than 900 quilt barns in 16 states.

My state apparently has more than 250 quilt barns. I can't believe I've never heard of them. I'm feeling a bit ashamed. I really need to explore more of my state, and take the back roads on occasion...
