Greetings :),

I've read many times about the reputation the S&W .44 Russian cartridge, chambered in their No. 3 revolver, developed for accuracy in it's time. Does anyone know when specifically that rep developed? In other words, at what point would it be reasonable to assume that anyone in America, with reasonable access to current news and an interest in firearms, would have heard that this was a good cartridge/weapon combo for competetive shooting?

Thanks :),

This site...
http://www.gmdr.com/lever/44rutext.htm
...claims this about it:

The 44 Smith & Wesson Rusian ... initially built for use by the Russian Imperial Army, 1870. Commercialized in 1878, offered in the S&W Colt Bisley single action target revolvers, plus others. Over the ensuing three plus decades, the cartridge earned/developed a reputation for accuracy, setting records in the process. Until being superseded by the 44 Special with its introduction in 1907, besides just being very popular, the Russian was this country's "standard" big-bore revolver target cartridge of choice. [Emphasis added.]

So those three decades appear to span from 1878 to 1908.

Say, now that you point out the obvious, that is correct. Makes me wonder if the timelines are screwy, too.
