When you're idly channel surfing, what are the shows you'll watch to pass the time? I mean, the shows you've already seen every episode of, say on TV Land, or WGN, or WTBS, whichever channels showing reruns? And even though you know the whole series by heart, it's still a pleasure to watch the reruns?

For me, it's:

MASH. The first "adult" show I watched as a kid. I can still watch any rerun and enjoy it.

Simpsons. Twenty years of episodes gives me lots of episodes I still love to watch.

Star Trek, original series (and to some extent, TNG). I've seen all of TOS, but I still love watching i. And with TNG, there are lots of episodes I haven't seen. But at the same time, I've seen--and have disliked--many others.

Yours?

Law & Order (the original--I love the Briscoe years)

Bones

I don't remember the official title, but the cartoon Batman series with Kevin Conroy as Batman (and Mark Hamil as the Joker)

Seinfeld - The cast has great chemistry...a wonderful situational comedy.

Sopranos - I am a closet mafioso...

Dexter - great show.

None that are currently on the air (at least on channels I get).

I do enjoy hosting my own reruns of WKRP, Doctor Who, and Firefly. There are others, but those are the ones most frequently in rotation.

The Twilight Zone

All the old Poirot and Miss Marple mysteries.

I would also say all the old Sherlock Holmes eposides with Jeremy Brett, but I finally just bought the full and complete DVD set. I also have sets of The Rifleman, All Creatures Great and Small (one of the best TV shows of all times), and the later version of Nero Wolfe.

Now that a lot of old TV shows are online, I occasionally enjoy going back and watching something old such as Dragnet ("Just the fact, ma'am."), Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Have Gun, Will Travel, etc.

The original Twilight Zone. If I were writing for television (never mind not being around when it was first on!), I would have sold my grandmother into white slavery for a chance to have worked on that show.

The Dick Van Dyke Show and That Girl. Both series weren't on for very long, at least by today's standards, each running for "only" five seasons, but they had a depth of character that's sorely lacking in TV writing these days. You learned so much about the characters and their backgrounds. Both have earned classic status simply from great writing and engaging characters and Marlo Thomas is just too damned adorable, anyway.

The Prisoner and The Avengers, two more classics of television bar none. The Prisoner was a chilling look at then current Cold War politics and one man's loss of identity, and The Avengers helped set the standard of spy story. Both were clever, well cast, and well written. (Separate argument: Cathy Gale, Emma Peel, or Tara King? Which one and why? 25 words or less.)

WKRP In Cincinnati is another that still charms after all these years. Another shining example of excellent casting and great writing that showed you who the characters really were.

Echoing mostly:

Star Trek TOS and TNG
Dick VanDyke
M*A*S*H
Law And Order (but I would love to see the pre-Sam Waterston years again)

to that list I would have to add NCIS. For some reason, they never get old for me regardless of how often I've seen them.

(Separate argument: Cathy Gale, Emma Peel, or Tara King? Which one and why? 25 words or less.)
Only need 3: Emma Peel. Duh!

Scrubs--seen every episode at least 3 times, don't care, and will watch them all another twenty times.

Seinfeld-it's hilarious, and it's about nothing!

Simpsons-love! Plus it's always good to watch more Simpsons and then make obscure Simpsons references in daily conversation and see who gets it. The world needs more of that.

Living Single-it's a rare sitcom that cracks me up and has an actual plot.

M*A*S*H - it's still funny and timely.

And 'All In The Family' - same reasons plus it's so politically incorrect.

Other than that, I'm not a big fan of watching reruns

I don't watch much new TV. I'd prefer putting in a DVD of something classic.

Wild, Wild West
Lost in Space
Combat!
Get Smart
Honey West
Time Tunnel
Kolchak: The Night Stalker
Jonny Quest (The Original Series, not the schlock Ted Turner forced on us)
Scooby-Do (again, The Original Series, not anything with Scrappy Do)
Star Trek (There is only ONE Star Trek)
Have Gun, Will Travel
The Addams Family
The Outer Limits
Secret Agent Man
Man from UNCLE
Naked City
Starsky and Hutch
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
The Monkees
Special Unit 2

to name just a few.

Simpsons first 10 seasons...anything after that it's hit or miss.

Seinfeld. It's gold Jerry!

Quantum Leap. Never get tired of some scientist leaping awkwardly through time with a sex-oholic hologram.

Lost. As the series goes on, the rewatchability of each episode goes up. Makes you appreciate all of them in a new light.

X-Files. The original conspiracy show.

Northern Exposure. I love that little Alaskan town warmed with wry wit.

Gilmour Girls (don't tell my guy friends). But I love that little New England town warmed with wry wit.

30 Rock. Hilarious!

The Office. Aaaah yes...awkward work situations.

M*A*S*H - last Christmas, the hubs gave me all 11 seasons (including the finale) on DVD, and I still watch it on TVLand. I remember watching it back when it was still on the air, and it's still funny.

The George Lopez Show - I just started watching this last summer, compliments of my daughter. It's frickin' hilarious.

ER - The early seasons remind me of what a great show it was the first time around.

CSI - I miss Grissom...

The Twilight Zone - just because Rod Serling was a genius.

The Honeymooners - It's still pretty funny

All in the Family - freakin' hilarious and it approached issues in a way that tv writers would never get away with today. But I only watch until Gloria and Meathead move to CA. Once that annoying little girl comes on, the show goes off.

I would also say all the old Sherlock Holmes

Argh! Forgot that--but that's only because I haven't caught it in reruns in forever and I haven't convinced anyone that it's a great Yule/b-day gift yet. *sigh*

Jeremy Brett is so very hard to beat as Holmes.

I forgot Gilmore Girls. I'll stop and watch anything up to season four.

'The Andy Griffith Show'. I just rediscovered it and it's hilarious. I swear to god, Don Knotts was a genius. I don't care if it reveals me for a dork, the show holds up.

I think that's it for reruns. They all just are great entertainment for me, but for totally different reasons. It's really hard to even describe why I like them all so much. :)

I've read the complete Sherlock Holmes canon more times than I can remember, and Jeremy Brett has completely eclipsed whatever mental image of Holmes I ever had. He is THE quintessential Holmes.

MASH - timeless and awesome
Saved by the Bell - still makes me laugh
Fresh Prince - ditto above
Firefly - you really need to know why?
ER - only through season 8 or so, to relive its early days of glory
Judging Amy - no reason other than I really like this show
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit - Christopher Meloni
America's Next Top Model - guilty pleasure
Buffy & Angel - because I love these shows

I'd love it if My So Called Life was in reruns. The teenage girl in me lives!

I've never seen an episode of M*A*S*H. How sad is that?

At least you know how to spell it. :D

And you must have been trying to avoid it. For a while there it seemed everybody ran it in reruns.

As a military man, I had mixed feelings for it. I enjoyed the comedy but hated how they made anyone who was "career" out to be complete idiots.
