Okay, I just moved into a house with an oil furnace and oil hot water heater and both keep turning themselves off so that I have to go down and re-light the pilots. I'm guessing that this means there's something wrong with the oil supply. Does anyone know if that is correct? I've checked the tank and there's plenty of oil left and I don't know if I need to call someone to check the furnace and hot water heater or if I should call the oil supply company that services the tank.

I've never had oil before. Anyone have any idea where I should start?

It's been years since I had an oil furnace. It crapped out and we had to replace it with natural gas because there was a hole in the heat exchange. Wish I could help but I just wanted to say how much I appreciate the Red Green reference in your thread title. Thumbs up!

Good luck with the furnace. I didn't know oil furnaces had pilot lights.

I'd call the guy to check the furnace and water heater first, rather than the oil company. They only fill the tank.

It may be a clogged line, or it may simply be dust build-up or something like that. But the furnace guy should be able to tell you.

Yeah, if both units are acting up there's likely water in the feed line. There should be a filter on the tank that looks like an oil filter used on cars. If it's old it's probably clogged and allowing water to enter the line through the bypass.

Call a repairman.

I have to agree.

They have to prime mine each year, so they light the pilot light and prime for $40. My oil supply company does all the service, too, so call yours and see. Or use a separate one; maybe the web has reviews on price, etc, nowadays.

Clogged nozzles. Never heard of a pilot light with oil, I thought that's more of a gas thing. My oil furnace gets off on a super spark plug sort of thing, ka-whoosh! But it needs cleaning and nozzle replacement now and then. Going out always means maintenance time. Staying out means oops you ran out.

Lots of good info. Thanks to all. Yes Matera, I think it's more of a spark pluggy thingymabob. The oil company services from the tank to the furnace for free (I'm guessing this is so people keep using oil) so I'll be calling them in the morning to ask about all of this water in the line and priming business. I got the water heater working long enough to at least get a nice, hot shower in and so far the furnace is still working...I think.

Okay, so my plan is:

1.) Call oil company to fix defunct ka-woosh (furnace was just serviced last month)
2.) Call Wayne and have him come over and peacock around in a utilikilt.
3.) Take pictures
4.) Buy a brown chicken and a brown cow.

Yes. This will work.

ETA: If this plan fails, I will be using KTC's plan.

Wish I could help, but I'm not handy at all. I don't think I could ever own an entire house on my own. Good luck! Your plan seems good to me!
