View Full Version : How to research hate crimes

So I have an idea for a new novel about a girl who sustains a brain injury from a hate crime. I am actually thinking of setting the novel near my hometown in Orange County, Huntington Beach, because there is a pretty big White Supremacy population there (I googled hate crimes in HB and found one in 2009), as well as a lot of diversity. I am not sure how to go about researching, though- maybe start with the local police or something?

I also need to research brain injuries for this, but I'm better covered on that front.

Check out the Southern Poverty Law Center (http://www.splcenter.org/intel/intpro.jsp), which tracks extremist groups.

See if there is an Orange County chapter of the Anti-Defamation League.

I think the FBI site has a section on hate crimes if you want general information, statistics, etc.

Try hatewatch.com. There's a lot of good information there too.
