Oh, yeah, sorry about that. I'm all out of it because I had to wrestle/get bitten by a geriatric sheep today, and my brain isn't working like it should.

WORD UP, KIRK IS A JERK!

And the logs of those voyages, by Alan Dean Foster, are just as good, if not better.

When was that made?

IIRC, it was the late 1970's. I was still in high school and at the height of my Trek mania at the time.

The only thing I remember being annoyed at is that Nichelle and Majel did pretty much ALL the female voices, and it got really noticeable after a while (like about 3 episodes). For the time, it was a decent show.

Methinks the animated series used some classic sci-fi as source material, I can remember boggling over one of Larry Niven's short stories ("The Soft Weapon"?) shakily adapted to the cartoon Trek scenario. And they had a bird-headed crewman or similar odd critter among the regulars. No insult intended to bird-headed AWers, but that was just plain wrong.

He wasn't bird-headed. He actually always looked more like a raisin head, but I'm running off old memories. IIRC, he was the navigator at times. There was also a feline officer, communications, I think she was. That never made sense to me, since I believe Nichelle did her voice, so why not just use Uhura? *shrug*

Majel Barrett-Roddenberry did M'ress's voice.

And the animation was pretty sucktacular.

Hanna-Barbera was going through a bad phase in their animation at that time.

Most of the shows seemed to consist of the main characters running from right to left, one at a time, except for the occasional left to right.

I got really bored with it after the first fifty times.

ST:TAS was Filmation, an even cheaper studio. If you watched enough of their shows, you could see how much they used rotoscoping over stock footage.

Ye could be right, I looked around but couldn't see anything resembling what my disintegrating memory chips threw up.

That site's got some nifty reference links.

Rotos can scope?
Who knew?
I just enjoy saying: "They are subdued! Strip them of their weapons and personal effects and remove the Voodoo pins!"

I mean really, how often do you get the chance?

The badness of the animation is like 98% of its power.

The random close-ups on 1/4 of a character's face. The total lack of expression on everybody's face; not just Spock. The way the whites of their eyes are all skin-tone. I love it so much.

On a related note, I just re-re-re-watched Futurama's brilliant "Where No Fan Has Gone Before" TOS pastiche, which had me chuckling (again).

With all the nostalgia over bad cartoons it will only be a matter of time before the early Marvel 'animated comics' from the sixties are regarded as classics of the medium.
