Always seemed like a very classy guy. I'm popping in Dirty Dancing tonight and To Wong Foo, if I can manage to stay up that late. No one could have done that DD role (sexy + vulnerable) but him.
He's fought a good (and very public) fight with cancer. Pancreatic cancer is basically terminal, so I am not surprised. But still, it's sad. Only 57 years old. A friend of mine worked with him on Tall Tales -- great guy in person, apparently.
It's really hard to hear. He's always been one of my favorite actors. I loved him in the Outsiders and Road House. He was awesome in Dirty Dancing and Ghost.
I can't comprehend how difficult it would be to fight a cancer battle while in the public eye. It had to be scary enough, yet he had class and dignity throughout his ordeal.
I'm devastated. Some of his movies got me through some very difficult times when I was hiding in a dark room as a child. I know that sounds lame, but.
I also have a 75-year-old great aunt who's been "married" to him ever since she first saw Dirty Dancing. She has a shrine and everything. I'm waiting until it's not too early to call up and break the news... She doesn't watch TV in the mornings or buy newspapers. She won't know until I tell her.
Hate to hear people go in this way (where they struggle with a terminal illness), even though you know it's coming, it still sucks.
I wasn't a huge fan, but I thought he was ok (and from what I understand, he was a good dude). My favorite moment was when he was on SNL and did the chippendale thing with Chris Farley.
RIP. His struggle with this disease has been long, in terms of pancreatic cancer - 20 months - and he's been so brave the whole time. Publicly, anyway. He will be missed.
