How often do you check your rep points? Do you wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat wondering what people have said about you? Do you give a big "WOO HOO" whenever you get more points?

If so, this is the club for you...sporting its own clubhouse and comfy chairs. Come on in!! :D

Welcome back, everyone - we're retiring some of the very, very long-running threads and opening a new chapter. The thousands of posts tend to get pretty intensive for anyone on a slow connection, and can make the forums hang instead of loading.

Since the Rep Point folks had blown past 50k posts in the original thread, you were on The List.

Don't worry. We promise nothing bad is going to happen to the old threads. We aren't euthanizing them, or recycling your posts into soylent green for the databases, or anything like that. The Volume 1 rep point thread (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44734&page=2322) is going to spend the rest of its days at a lovely retirement farm for well-loved threads.

Cheers! And if I may be of any further service, please feel free to call on me.

no no - it's because Mac and them did the reuilding/renewing/re-softwaring.

in almost every case, they were sooooo many pages long, they decided to lock the long threads and start new ones. They should all be there.

MacAllister
09-08-2009, 01:22 AM
Phew. Thought it was me. And my big mouth. (Just kidding!)Naw. :) What happens when a thread hits right around 20K posts is that it starts to suck up a LOT more of the resources both on our server and on the member's machine. Image-heavy threads, especially. The indexing script gets to a point where it bogs down and can choke -- so the threads stop getting indexed, too.

There are bigger boards than us, in terms of number of threads and number of users -- but that thing we do here, with threads that go on for thousands of pages, and tens of thousands of posts, year after year? That's actually fairly unusual BB behavior. I'm thinking I gotta write a paper about it, or something.

So people on slower connections start having a hard time loading that thread, and then shortly thereafter, the whole ROOM can get difficult for some members to open. NEPAT got unstable and nearly collapsed the Bewares forum, a couple of years ago, that way.

So it's just house-keeping. Go right on chatting. :)

Stew21
09-08-2009, 01:32 AM
It is an interesting phenomenon, Mac, that so many threads here go on for thousands of posts. I've been a member of other BBs and have never seen anything like it.

I refer to them as "home" threads. Part of a community, we have access to all areas of the community, but we stick to our own neighborhoods a lot.

If you do write a paper on it, I'd love to read it. :)

Neurotic
09-08-2009, 01:48 AM
Huh. I've never spent a great deal of time on boards before. (Don't look at me like that. It's true.) So I had no idea this was freakish behavior.

Of course I shouldn't be surprised. So much of my behavior is. :D

That word, I don't think it means what you think it means...

Fenika

"Besides, I'd probably kill your friend."
"Oh, well, he is already dead."

Classic.

And yes, less satirical. No blindly chasing after the love of your life when she's a cranky, whiny, worthless sod. Ofc, that made me aware my MC was bordering on Buttercup territory, lol.

Dire.

Soon it will be with betas and I can stop fretting for awhile and write other stuff.

Where has the day gone? I mean, really. I've barely got an hour left of work today.

Wish I only had barely an hour's worth of work to do, but *shrug* I'll take the end of the day quite happily.

BTW, everyone celebrate with me. Went to the doctor's today and discovered I've taken off sixteen (that's 16) pounds since the first of the year.

Hi again... hope everyone is well....

I got lost in the Real World... they were holding me hostage... I had to explain to an 11 year old that it was unacceptable to get an F on an OPEN BOOK TEST!!! Surely the worst sort of torture... with humongous brown eyes overfilled with tears staring back at me.... I had to leave the room so I didn't cry myself...

I must come back to this reality where I am nicer and more serene....

Tell 11 year old it is okay. We must not dwell on failures but on being better later...

I am quite liking all these new/old threads, means I can join in without feeling I have to read 20 thousand posts to get up to speed.

I always have to read an entire thread before commenting. I know, it's a problem.

Hettie
09-09-2009, 03:05 AM
Rachel...

It will be ok...

I told the 11 year old that I loved her very much, but she was never to be the first one done on a test again...

I had the 11 year old look up the questions and write the right answers on the paper...

I told the 11 year old that if she failed a test and tried her very best, I would never be upset....

(it was multiple choice and matching by the way...)

Hettie

Nothing much. I finished my last novel in the school holidays and now I'm between projects. Actually, this week I've been too ill to do much of anything and ought to be in bed. Which I will be, shortly.

I am taking a break myself... I am angry with my WIP for not cooperating... I am sorry you are ill... not number 5 is it?

Rachel.... no one would ever say it and mean it! You are possibly the coolest person I have EVER come into contact with... so cool you made me dangle a preposition by my awe of you!

I read that as proposition, and that whole post took on a different meaning to me.

Nope, after number 4 I had everything tied. The last little bugger almost killed me, I wasn't planning to see if number five would finish the job :D
I have some sort of crappy virus, or flu. I can also blame child number 4 for that. She gave it to me.

Hettie

piggy or birdie???

Ellefire
09-09-2009, 04:26 AM
No idea. Flu -like symptoms could be either or neither. It's not like doctors are even testing for piggy flu anymore, from what I can gather, they are simply throwing tamiflu prescriptions at anything that resembles flu. Dd3 was ill for a week, part of that was a virus, and part of that was tonsilitis. It's possible I've just had one crappy virus piggyback another.

Hettie

Blasted germs... schools should be outlawed... children should have to learn in a bubble on-line so no germs touch them, then come back to us...

I must work on that.

I've never had red bull. Never had the inclination to ever buy or drink it.

Back when I worked for Kmart, we got one of those kinds of high-energy drinks for free when the store started carrying them. I didn't drink mine and didn't drink mine until one day I came in dragging not only my keister but a good part of my spine and limbs behind me. Decided to give it a go. Got it chilled (can't stand drinking lukewarm anything) and took a hit--

--and promptly upchucked in my wastebin. It was the most vile thing ever to hit my mouth, and that includes some of the things from the farm when I was little.

It amazes me that people not only drink that stuff but seem to LIKE it. But, then, I don't understand a lot of things people like to consume, so I should just add that to the list, eh?

Sweetleaf
09-14-2009, 11:48 PM
They've started selling these Demon Shots here, which are concentrated energy drink shots. They work so well that the truckies hubby works with have started taking them instead of meth.

I had one a while ago when we had a night off from the kids and I haven't been up that late in years! Scary stuff.
