Hullo reppers. I am slowly making smoked fish pie. It probably doesn't sound appetising, but it really, really is.

I visited something which claimed to be a farmers market today. It was more of a fancy-pants farmers market than I was looking for, but I got some pretty nice stuff. I just wish I'd been able to get some pretty cheap stuff. That's probably my more pressing concern.

I have seen the thread you mentioned, and while I do not doubt its noble intent, I just don't think it's quite what the smilies are looking for at this time. We eat lots of turkey, watch TV and fall asleep. Oh, and spend time with our family, which is sometimes a good/bad thing.

Semi-historically it is a day to celebrate your blessings, based loosely on the feast celebrated by the Pilgrams who ended up relying on the local American Indians to make it through the first year. They were woefully unprepared when they arrived too late in the year to take advantage of the growing season and nearly starved.

This is how I was taught in school, probably there is a new & improved version by now.

Later we stole their land and herded them onto reservations when they complained.

Comes prebaked at a bakery or you can cheat even worse like I do and grab and can of mysterious "pumpkin pie filling", dump it in a crust and bake unti the crust edges brown.

Or the smoke alarm goes off.

Which ever comes first.

Generous application of whipped topping of your choice, the quantity dependent on how long the smoke alarm was going off before you remembered the pie in the oven.

It's a traditional dish, like turkey and candied yams and the mysterious-to-me-why-anyone-eats-it green bean cassarole.

Now, if I could get a good sweet potato pie, I'd be in heaven. Love it, but haven't had one since I divorced my ex. His grandmother (may she rest in peace) made the best sweet potato pie ever.

We're not having turkey, though. We've already had turkey several times this year. We're having a rib roast. Our one traditional dish is pumpkin bread. Old family recipe (my daughter is the seventh generation). Very very tasty.

LaurieD
11-23-2010, 04:33 AM
We'll have turkey with my hub's sausage craisin stuffing, mashed potatoes, enough baked sweet potato for me, veggie of my hub's choice (he cooks, I'm not about to argue veggies with a man who cooks Turkey Day Dinner), the traditional-to-me "cranberry log" and rolls for dinner. Dessert this year is a cherry pie - hub's fav, pumpkin pie - cuz my kids asked for one, the pie filling was on sale for less than $1, and I have an extra pie shell, and a mud pie - my fave of the moment.

We have the most delicious pumpkin doughnut-y pastries here at Christmas time. If you think about it, anything with enough sugar can be made into a dessert. ;)

Also, I believe the recipe for pumpkin pie came out as way to use the leftovers from pumpkin carving for Halloween.

We made homemade pumpkin pie once. It wasn't easy figuring out how much pumpkin we would need to get the equivalent of one can of pumpkin, but we managed ok. It was good too, but way too much trouble.

We also did pecan pies once, when we received some corn syrup and pecans. That one was good too, and quite easy to make. I miss pecans. :(

The Christmas cake:

Those look lovely, Sara! An old friend of mine lived in Rio de Janiero for ages, so I've seen many of them. Even tasted one or two, the couple times she came to visit (pre-2001).

And I'm not a big fan of sweets--but those are very tasty.

I love the green bean casserole. That's one of my favorites to make. (it's also because I have no idea how to cook a turkey and a casserole is much easier for my lazy brain) A rib roast sounds yummy. We've done the ham thing too in the past.

Along with the pumpkin and sweet potato pies I've seen at the grocery, another one I've enjoyed is straight rhubarb or a combo of rhubarb and strawberry.

I don't know why I keep coming in here. I'm always hungry after I leave. :D

Bonding rituals and growing lifelong relationships. Or, partying like a rockstar. Whichever is more your speed.
(I attended Syracuse which had about 53 greek houses in the late 80s - who knows how many there are now.)

Rachel

53 greek houses? Wow... we have 6. Well, 6 accepted ones. Then there is one particular one we avoid because they are always raided and... well... you know.

But I joined a sorority simply because my roommate introduced me to the girls and they are awesome. We do party sometimes, but there is a lot of emphasis on keeping up grades while having fun and doing charity stuff.

We don't really do the whole fraternity/sorority thing here, .

Largely depends on the size of the school, too. At Penn State, they were largely about conformity and parties. Gives people who need to belong someplace to belong to. They *do* accomplish some charity work, but that's minor compared to most of the social-scene oriented activities.

Plus there's the utter humiliation that comes with pledging. Though, again, that may be lessened at smaller schools.

Honestly, with three kids and three dogs, it doesn't seem like a big deal. Given the choices between fecal incontinence, euthanasia, or having to clean up that nasty smelling tumor for the rest of his life, the incontinence was the least of the options.

I've systematically been removing carpeting from this house because I hate carpet. Rugs are so much to replace if need be and we mostly wear layers. Vinyl flooring that looks like wood stands up to kids and dogs sooooooo much better.

Neurotic
11-29-2010, 10:01 AM
Yeah, I guess kids and pets must be hell on flooring. My parents held off on replacing their carpets until the youngest child likely to visit them regularly was old enough to remember to take off their shoes when they came inside. Then our dog got really old and lost all control of her bladder. They just pulled up the carpets and lived on bare floor and the odd rug in key places until she (the dog) died.

I never thought I'd say this in here but...it's all Jed's fault.

Bos should probably send him a card or something for this. :D

HOWDY FAIR MAIDENS AND HANDSOME RUGGED DUDES!

Is there a third category? That might, perhaps, actually be applicable to those of us who are nowhere near "rugged" unless you've had WAY too much to drink.

and no Bos...I've only invited Syn to come down to visit...and....that's for purely entertainment purposes only

Heh. I feel speshul. :)

Please tell me there will at least be pics.

okay, so I totally just butchered that post....ugh, I've been here nine months now and I still can't get this stuff right...ugh

you mean.... like this? :wag:

And don't feel bad, I've been here much longer than 9 months and only recently figured out how to jump to the last unread post in a thread.

Nah.... that can't be right.

Jed's one of the nicer mods around. He doesn't even mock the newbies, like some of us (ok, me) would do if we were in charge of the newbie forums.

:D

besides, if it's not my fault... or rob's... well, then it'll feel like the universe is out of whack or something.

I know, right? There's a newbie thread titled something like "Got Room for One More?" I totally want to go in that thread and post NO!, but then Mac might get all mad and Jed might breathe fire on me. It could get ugly.

It's really quite fantastic, having to jump through hoops in order to get a number blocked. Turns out I have to have the date and time of 4 calls before my phone company will even look at doing it. Well, one more to go. I just wish I'd started noting it down the first time we got called instead of the third. *grumbles*

Um, aren't you the customer? If you are paying for the services, shouldn't they serve you or something? Why should you have to go through all that trouble to block a number?

You need to mess with their minds.

It works so much better than "do not call lists."

That would be nice, wouldn't it? They have their rigid system with its arbitrarily chosen number of calls, though, and they'll only serve me when I have the information. They won't, you know, look for it themselves. That'd be too hard. I'd be being unreasonable by even asking them to do it. :tongue

:D

The do not call list only works when you're dealing with a genuine company, not some call centre in the third world running a scam trying to get credit card information or trying to get you to buy a non-existent product to fix a non-existent problem with a non-existent virus on your (in my case non-existent) windows computer. I'm not quite sure how to mess with their minds in that instance, either.

Next time they call, in a very low, hushed whisper, this is what you say:

"Oh thank god you called. It's trying to kill me, you know."

When they ask you why you're whispering:

"It listens to *everything*."

:evil

What's Latin for 'cherries and bagpipes'?

I'm thinking of having Sam Neill staring out at me from inside the screen, telling me to do stuff. There'll be a preamble, of course. But if they're still with me after Sam, I'll roll out the Latin and chant until they hang up.
