Sadron, have a magic glass. I know it can't help, since it only fills with your beverage of choice (though a few odd summons have occurred), but hopefully it can soothe your sorrows for awhile.

And hello everyone. I have returned from the place of magic and wonder with birds and nice folks and long bright days. I've been back a week and this place sux same as always. Lesigh.

You do know that when Juliet asks this she's asking *why* Romeo has to be who he is - i.e. the boy from the wrong family - rather than where he is.

Or did your English teacher not dissect that one? Cause mine did. And made me memorize the damn speech. All of it. Start to finish.

I can still quote the damn thing, and I *hate* that play.

slcboston

Is that the one with Christopher Lambert?

Yes... and no. Lambert did star in a film "Beowulf" that was somewhat loosely based on the original Old English text. *VERY* loosely.

Banderas was in "The Thirteenth Warrior" which was based on a Micheal Crichton novel with was less loosely based on Beowulf. And a pretty decent film.

Hmmm...I've never heard of most of these shows you guys are talking about, with the exception of Project Runway (I stopped watching regularly after the Santino/Andre season) and House (which my daughter likes--I saw one episode and was bored senseless).

The only shows that gets DVR'd in our house is Ghost Hunters and Ghost Hunters International, because my daughter wants them.

I guess I really don't watch that much TV outside of the occasional Bones or L&O (the original) reruns.

Yup. When the satellite company gave it to me, they said it had 150 hrs available. I scoffed and said that was way more than I'd need.... but then all these movies came on that I haven't seen and want to, and the shows get backlogged bcs I'd rather record and watch an "hour" show in it's actual runtime of 40 minutes...

and, well, 150 hrs is still a lot, but I'm starting to understand how it could fill up.

and the kids have a bunch of their shows on there. That way I always have something good on when I need them to watch a little TV.

Yup to this, too. Of course, for my little one that includes some things I like such as Mythbusters and Dirty Jobs.

I'm the eldest of four. My father wanted 4 girls, my mother wanted 4 boys. Dad won. As usual.

My ex wanted to have kids until there was a son. I really didn't want kids at all, but said "first son or three and done." He agreed after a bit of discussion. #2 was a boy. He went in and got fixed (or broken, depending on your viewpoint) to prove to me that he meant it.

My sister, OTOH, desperately wanted a girl. She has 5 boys with two different husbands--and the last two nearly did kill her.

No, I don't understand some women's insistence on multiple children either, though I greatly prefer how I felt and looked in the early stages of my pregnancies (I was one of those weird women who LOST weight the first 4-6 months) to any other time.

for those of you with kids, have you seen the show "frannie's feet"?

The premise of the show is this little girl helps at her grandpa's shoe repair shop. Customers come in and leave their shoes. After they leave, Frannie puts the shoes on and is transported to another place and time, where she takes something back with her.

How many rules does this violate?! First of all, wearing someone else's shoes -- let alone a stranger's -- is just gross and totally not okay. It also makes a kid think it's okay to mess with stuff when you travel to the past. Makes me crazy.

Carry on.... :D

Carry on.... :D

This is one of those "teaching opportunities" that made me a "bad mother" when my kids were little.

When the new season started, my kids and I would take a couple of weeks and watch them together and then discuss them (kids have opinions as young as 3, after all). They'd say what they'd like and not like about a show and then I'd talk about the pluses and minuses of it from a parents' POV then we'd agreed as a group whether or not it was a show that would be watched.

They might be very taken with the idea of time traveling and "dressing up" in other people's shoes and such. Then I'd come back and remind them that TV is all pretend and in real-life, you don't put on other people's shoes and clothes without them knowing about it. And that while it's great to look and travel, taking something is still stealing and what is the punishment for taking what's not yours?

I found that giving my kids the sense of a difference between what's on TV shows being pretend and what happens in real life helped a lot in their view of entertainment in general. No temptations to tie a blanket around their necks and jump off of things to fly. No delusions about how hitting someone with a stick wasn't going to hurt or make them bleed.

I also looked at things like the tone of the show--did the characters talk down to my preschoolers like they were morons? If so, they didn't watch the show or did they use words and employ concepts that got them asking questions and thinking?

But, as I said, I was decried as a "bad mother" because I refused to let the TV babysit my kids and insisted they learn to think and make reasoned choices, so take anything I say about parenting with a huge sack of salt.

Del, I agree. He's not quite 2 yet, so discussions about the shows are limited right now and he mostly ignores the shows anyway, except for dancing to the songs. If he's in the mood to watch something we'll pop in one of his favorite DVDs that we're comfortable with him watching.

But yes, wearing other people's clothes and stealing aren't things i want him to think are cool.

At the risk of getting mega-reppied, I'm going to broach the W-topic.

I finally cleaned out my office space. Got the old dead computer out of there, put the old laptop in and hooked it up to the stereo speakers. I disconnected the modem and removed the anti-virus and mal-ware checkers. Even figured out what was wrong with the printer (dried-up ink cartridges--does that tell you how much I haven't done the W-topic seriously?) and set that to rights. Still got to go through the bookcases and get those in order, but all the knick-knacks are in their proper place.

See, I have a long history (1979-1999) of finishing a book in 6-9 months. They might not have been good books, but they were completed books. That was the one thing I knew I could take some pride in--I knew how to finish a book.

In 2001, I started on the journey to improving the actual story and have learned a lot. That's also the time I discovered writing sites, chat and all the other distractions the Net provides. Since 2001, I've finished one book, and that was in 2002.

So if I'm not around much, I'm at the other computer, trying to recapture my youthful zeal and dedication to the story.

'Course, it's also all you guys's (general internet peoples) fault. Being all too damned interesting and all. :wag:

Good luck Del!

And speaking of W- topics...

what?

and where you been?

hangin' out with them scerry writers?!

I've been working. I don't really get much of a chance to use the internet during the day, and at night the computer is usually in use by someone not me. Even if it wasn't, dial-up makes doing anything online tedious. But I'll be around a lot more in about a month or so, once I'm back in Auckland where I belong. :D

Also, I wonder if my last post's also would make more sense if you knew 'car' was the extra-clever code word for 'man'.

Hence the not literally. I am not literally buying a man. And also, not literally a car.

Damnit, it made sense at the time!

Hey! Soon it will be Spring, Summer will fly away, and then it will be Christmas again. It isn't too weird.
