Can someone please explain the difference between POD and Self-Publishing?

POD relates to using digital printing--a printing press that can generate single books as they are needed rather than only large print runs.

Self-publishing is acting as your own publisher.

POD stands for print on demand and is a printing method as veinglory describes. Some large publishing houses use the method for special circumstances like advance copies and backlist books that still occasionally sell a few copies. Some smaller publishers use the method exclusively so as to not invest a lot of money in warehoused books and some vanity presses and unscrupulous publishers use the method to sell books to the author rather than the book buying public.
