I had a general question.

Lets say you write your book, get it signed with a small press, and the book is a hit.

Can a small press handle the print/distribution burdens of a runaway hit?

In this event do they sell up and hand off to a bigger house?

And what would constitute a runaway hit as far as small presses are concerned and is there ever a point where it becomes too much for them to handle?

In this event, are you at a disadvantage as a writer for not being with a bigger press?

Lastly, any comments, anecedotes, and ponderings on this or related subject would be useful.

thanks for your time

You might want to dig around for the story on THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER. U.S. Naval Institute Press is and was a small press, who all of a sudden had a major best seller. They went crazy, but got the job done. First fiction book it ever published.

Best of luck,
