View Full Version : Champions Online

Okay, so, I've been playing around with the beta for this.

My reactions?

Well...its City of Heroes.

But more so.

So, if you liked COH, you'll like Champions Online. And as COH is the ONLY mmo I ever played for more than 20 days (Age of Conan does not count as I still say that it was a fantastic single player game with a shitty MMO strapped to the side like some kind of cancerous growth).

Anywho, the first thing that I noticed about CO is that...well...my head exploded from the sheer CHOICE offered you.

There are enough heroic arctypes and heroic powers that you can mix and match and create any kind of hero you want.

Cybernetic wrist arms combined with black magic? Sure!

Power armored angel? Why not!?

Superman, except he uses guns cause he's not a pussy now? OF COURSE!

And this is just the two STARTING powers you select. Once you grab those and compete a rather involved tutorial, you get to select travel powers, buff powers, attack powers...all sorts of powers!

And, of course, you can make any kind of physical apperance.

So, what did I do?

Well, I actually made 6 characters before finally finding one I liked.

Lets just follow the course of the one I liked.

Now, I actually like making physical appearences first, then trying to decide what powers fit that than the other way around, so I started off focusing on what my character looked like.

And, because I continue to have a MASSIVE hardon for Planescape Torment, I decided to make my character look as similar to Annah as possible. And yes, you CAN have a rat-tail! Woohoo!

Anywho, once I had my Annah character made, I decided to make it slightly less of a rip off by making her right arm cybernetic. And lo, Cyber-Demon was born!

I decided for a custom power set (Rather than selecting an archtype). My first two powers were SONIC ARROW and GRIM REAPER'S BLOW!

Basically, I can use a sword to slice and dice...or shoot a sonic arrow from my amazing super bow!

I played through the tutorial and leveled up a few times (And let me say, leveling up looks awesome. Its like the flash of light from WOW, except it looks a BIT more like the Quickening from Highlander, sans windows and cars exploding)

You can.

Cars, rubble...heck, you can beat the shit out of people with streetlamps.

And there are capes.

Anywho, the best things about CO is that it realized that people don't want to wait till they get to level 20 (or whatever level it required to get travel powers) to get travel powers!

So, right off the bat, you can grab a travel power and they are AWESOME.

Jetpacks, jetboots, superjump, acrobatics, superspeed, teleportation, tunneling, flight, WEBSLINGING, hovering disks...

This game just BEGS for you to make a bunch of characters to try out all of the awesome stuff that you can't get with just one character.

Did I mention that you can throw cars at people?

So, I might actually get a job so I can pay for a monthy subscription for this sucker!

So, if you liked COH, get CO.

Cause its COH but bigger, better, more fun, and with more awesome.

Also, did I mention that you can be throw cars at bad guys?

yeah, the game is badassery.

have you made it out of a Crisis zone yet, Zoom?

Millennium City is HUGE! Think City of Heroes, without the walls. And that's only to lvl 20, you head to either Canada or back to the Desert after that.

then it's off to Monster Island.

Oh, yeah, there's an entire zone under water.

Now that the NDA is lifted, I can tell you I've been playing the game for a year through Alpha and Beta tests. What you can do is amazing in this game.

You know that sword? Well, you can change it to several default ones in the tailor shop right now. 'course you can craft a custom one on your own or get one from somebody later on.

Same thing for the bows, the guns, anything.

You probably haven't seen Grond yet.

I've jizzed in my pants.

And there are capes.

No capes! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M68ndaZSKa8)

That's me

Jizzing in my pants again.

Cuase my newest hero decided to try out webslinging.

Oooh yessssss its the best power EVERRRRRR

The Swinging travel power is coded from pure awesome.

If you take the Earth Travel power and you jump in the air and THEN activate the power, a cloud forms under your feet.

That's right, you can ride a cloud.

I need new pants...

Also, I am SO HAPPY!

I didn't know that you could change your stance in a tailor...I remade two characters from scratch cause I didn't like their stance.

Now, you know what?

Each stance seems to have a standing posture and a running posture...I really like the Beast standing position, but not the running animation.

I wish I could mix n' match the animations.

That'd be cool.

I think the beta is over, cause it won't let me log on...

08-22-2009, 01:19 AM
No, nevermind, its back up.

Whee! <swings all over the place>

08-22-2009, 03:10 AM
Yeah, when they take down the server at 2 am it won't be back up till noon central.

And, whre the stance is at you can change their expression as well.

08-22-2009, 03:14 AM
I know!

I like my expression though: Determined!

08-22-2009, 03:30 AM
Ok, I need to play this when it comes out.

Screw my tendency to become addicted to MMOs. I'll cope. :D

08-22-2009, 04:15 AM
I'm sure you will somehow manage to survive.

08-22-2009, 04:17 AM
I'm sure you will somehow manage to survive.

Yeah, who needs food and sleep when I can FLY A FREAKIN CLOUD!!!

08-22-2009, 04:20 AM
I love seeing teams of super heroes fly around in their special ways...I mean, a webswinger keeping pace with a guy in a cape flying and a techno-magician who bamphs around like nightcrawler?!

Name one other MMO where you see that!

08-22-2009, 04:26 AM
So. Freaking. Bitchin'

08-22-2009, 04:31 AM
This is the stickiest thread ever.

/looks at Zoombie's christmas list to santa:

"Champions Online"
"Costco-sized box of Trojans"

08-22-2009, 04:37 AM
Do they make them big enough?

08-22-2009, 04:39 AM
Do they make them big enough?

Of course, my friend:

08-22-2009, 04:40 AM

08-22-2009, 04:42 AM

08-22-2009, 04:43 AM
(seriously, this game sounds all sorts of bad-ass)

08-22-2009, 05:08 AM
It IS badass!

08-22-2009, 05:53 AM
Any game where you can punch someone so high up into the air they die from the falling damage is bad ass.

And, yes, you can do that.

08-22-2009, 06:16 AM
My only complaint is that GODDAMN there are a lot of people playing this game...

So much that my poor computer is crying electric tears as it tries to run the game.

08-23-2009, 10:44 AM
My prediction for launch- they'll shoot up close to a million, maybe go over, and by 6 months later they'll settle down to the 300,000 to 500,000 range of a successsful mmo.

City of Heroes (their previous game) is still running strong 5 years later at roughly 130,000 active subs.

08-24-2009, 09:22 PM
today's the last day for Beta. If you're on, head to Millennium City to fight off the invasion of giant robots so you'll have Beta Only content rewards at Live Launch.

Played CB and OB
Interesting, but not quite my game.
