A friend of mine is having a play produced. She asked me a question regarding how credit is given for the script. It's a question I'm not sure I can answer with 100% certainty.

She wrote the actual script, but her former writing partner assisted with story and characters. Now, in the world of screenwriting (which I'm quite familiar with) you would do it like this:

Story by
Jane Doe and John Smith

Screenplay by
Jane Doe

Question is: What is the proper wording for a play? Would it be:

A Play Written by Jane Doe

Story and Characters by

Jane Doe & John Smith

Your responses are appreciated!

This is my guess, based on various published playscripts.

examples:

The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, by Herman Wouk, based on his novel, "The Caine Mutiny"

Big River: the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Book by William Hauptman, Adapted from the novel by Mark Twain

The Desperate Hours, by Joseph Hayes, Based on the novel by Joseph Hayes

so,

He Stoops to Bonk Her, a play in three acts, by Jane Doe, based on a story by Jane Doe and John Smith
