Deflowered, and at my age

I am now officially deflowered. Thirty hours ago, I was a hold-out with no piercings and no tattoos. Twenty-nine hours ago I surrendered.



Sorry, hasty photo taken in bathroom mirror with poor lighting. It's a cubomedusa (box jellyfish). This species (Carybdea marsupialis) is from our (U.S.) West Coast, and related to the deadly box jellies of Australia. It's based on a photo that adorned the cover of the British journal Nature back in '79, from a paper I published there on the beast. It's in celebration for a big grant I just received to study neural control of directional swimming in cubos.

I explained a little more about the image in the original post, on edit. I'll see if I can find the original picture, but I may have to wait until Monday when I'm back at work.

It's a mirror shot, so the tat is on the left arm, and the hand was resting on the sink counter. And I'll stick to that story...

Very strange. The original photo is all over the web if one googles the species. That photo belongs to the head diver at University of California, Santa Barbara and he gave me full use of it since he would collect the beasts for me when I was there as a grad student. If you google the Nature archives (for 1979), you may find the cover to see it's the same exact photo. The link shows the photo, but it's flipped back-to-front, so the tentacles bend to the opposite side as the tat.
