My current WIP takes place in 1902 Ocean City, MD. Many of the founding families of Ocean City still live there, 4 and 5 generations later. I'm trying to find descendents to interview.

I have specific questions to ask each of the families I'm contacting, but I'd also like to know anything else they have to tell me. Family stories, legends, etc. that would have taken place around the turn of the last century.

What kinds of questions can I ask that will prompt memories? I want to leave it open-ended enough (or have enough questions) that I get a variety of stories, but not so open-ended that they can't come up with anything.

Any suggestions?

Read up on similar interviews done by others.

If you're doing this by e-mail, chances are poor there will be any spontaneous recollections of family stories. A face time interview works better for that.

Check newspaper archives of the period for local events. Those can be quite helpful.
