Hi.

Another quick question -- this one about 's.

Would these be correct:

He pushed me into the toilet's wall.
He slammed the car's door.

I thought they were, but now I'm not too sure. I understand the two rules for 's, but I just got confused with these two examples.

Yeah. It's possessive. The wall of the toilet. The door of the car. Apostrophe in possessives. :)

This is sort of okay, but would be better (imo) without the 's's.

He pushed me into the toilet wall.
He slammed the car door.

Simpler. :)

This has been asked and answered many times here at AW, but it never hurts to review.

Yes, the toilet's wall and the car's door are correct. They are in the possessive mode.

However, the attributive mode is also correct:

He pushed me into the toilet wall.
He slammed the car door.

Happily or unhappily, the choice is still a matter of context and style.

I'd recommend, as a general matter of style, trying to avoid using possessive 's with inanimate objects. It's not incorrect, but it often seems clumsy to me, and commonly, as Chase pointed out, is unnecessary.

Thank you.

I tried to look it up, but couldn't find anything. But that's probably my poor search skills. Heh.
