Hey guys, sorry if this has already been asked... I did a search and didn't find anything, so here goes.

I was just wondering why one needs to be 21 in order to access the SYW erotica section. I don't have much interest in reading any erotica at the moment, but while inside SYW I did notice this information and started to wonder about it. It's been bugging me for a couple of days now. One is legally an adult at 18 years old, and can buy erotica books and pornography, so why would one need to be 21 to access a similar section on a forum? I'm just hoping someone can answer this, because I'm infinitely curious! :P

I *think* it's because not everyone accessing AW is from the United States, and some other countries have even dumber more ridiculous stricter laws than we do. Since some people have really bad reactions to underage people viewing erotic content, the admin of AW wanted to be extra-cautious and chose the highest age of majority anywhere. Legal issues would be very bad for the forum, so you can't really blame the admin for being as careful as possible.

That's my understanding of it, anyway.

I'll spare you my rants about violence being so much more acceptable for children to read/view than sex. It's not AW's fault the values are so back-asswards.

The laws vary very much from country to country, and yes, state to state--much like the age of drinking.

I am really amazed at how violence is Okay but not sex. One Saturday afternoon I saw an interview in the middle of the day for a guy in jail who raped young boys, an intensive interview which I felt should only have been shown late at night. The Animal Channel has a show about animal police that really devastate me, showing animal cruelty.
Afraid to watch television now.....

Yup, the world's a crazy dumpster.

But in the case of Erotica SYW forum, Chasing the Horizon's reply is pretty much on target, there are legal age restrictions and that's all there is to it.

There's also no need to let questions like these bug you -- if in doubt, just ask the board owner directly. Mac's always complaining about how no one sends her any PMs.

dpaterso - Haha, fair enough. Next time, I shall just do that instead. :)

Thanks to everyone who replied. You learn something new every day I guess - I really had no clue that the age of majority for something like this could be as high as 21! That's... insane. And Chasing the Horizon, I absolutely do not blame the admin for making the rule in that case. The forum definitely does not need a lawsuit. This was just something I was curious about. :)
