jerry phoenix
07-10-2009, 01:33 PM
its starting to look like a draw, unless england can get a good number of early wickets on 3rd morning.

c'mon monty panasonic

jerry phoenix

What's wrong with our cricket?

We produce adequate batsmen but our last genuine strike bowler was Bob Willis (with an average in the low to mid 20s).

And he retired 25 years ago.

That was fantastic, a really enjoyable final couple of hours especially. I hope Monty got lots of pats on the back from his teammates. Roll on Thursday!

next test starts on thursday. four solid days to finish my first draft before the inevitable-'i'll just watch one more over'

Was anyone watching it while listening to Test Match Special on the radio? At one point, Boycott had a bit of a dry throat problem. Aggers asked him if he was okay, and Boycott explained about how his throat got very dry sometimes since the throat cancer, and his job, involving talking a lot as it does, aggravates it. Aggers couldn't resist this prize and told him, "You could try talking less." Boycott took it in good form; I (and everyone in the studio) cracked up laughing. Love Aggers. :)

jerry phoenix

boycott couldnt talk less if his wicket depended on it. gotta love boycs though.

love aggers and blowers. i could listen to that pair for days, oh, i do.

What a great last hour - unbearable tension.

So what changes would you like to see in the England side?

just two things for now.
1 better bowling
2 better batting

hohoho

steve harmison did well for eng lions. should be worthy of a place. some one needs to tell peiterson to be bold but not rash.

jerry phoenix
07-13-2009, 01:57 PM
cant believe Aggers said this morning that monty panasonic should get taken out of the side!!!!

whats a hero got to do?

jerry phoenix
07-13-2009, 08:18 PM
good to see harmy in the squad this week. worrying for flintoff tho'

if bell can get his bat going he is a must. proven at sillypoint/sillymidoff-ish and will really worry the batsman when monty panasoinc bowls, if monty plays-how can he not?

must get the first draft finished by thursday or i'm going to fall behind schedule.

this is a cut copy paste from a post as I have not yet found the way to this thread and this section of the forum.

Hi all,

I saw the pomie army at the 5th day of the first test of the ashes. for a moment I wondered was it England or India as I had never seen such a big crowd.

the match was quite a thriller.

my congrats to Pomies on saving the game.

I know the Oz will be furious just like Punter was at the press conference.

I have been a pomie supporter when it is ashes.

regards,

I suppose I should be happy with 360-6 for a first day total but after the start England made is seems like they've fallen short.

Sophia
07-17-2009, 01:02 AM
I was very pleased at first, but it did trail off after a while. I'm annoyed with Pietersen; it almost feels like he's sabotaging things.

Considering Lords is a batting-friendly pitch, and Australia I think are stronger batters than England, I'm expecting Australia to do much better than England did. Here's hoping England build up to a good total tomorrow (and I stop being so negative!).

jerry phoenix
07-17-2009, 04:52 PM
aus 22-2. wow! england are looking very strong. if the rain holds off eng could win this test.

It's been a great morning. I felt for Ponting, and was really impressed how smiley he was with the Queen.

I forced myself to stop watching at lunch. It's too distracting - I didn't get a word written this morning! But I hear the TV calling... must... resist...

Sophia
07-17-2009, 08:26 PM
Blimey! I switched it back on ten minutes ago, and just in time! 118-5. What an atmosphere!

jerry phoenix
07-17-2009, 09:24 PM

Bad light stopped play. The conditions really weren't on Australia's side, but still, what a day!

waylander
07-17-2009, 11:08 PM
Australia will need to bat fantasically well in their 2nd innings if they're going to avoid getting beaten.

Not too much sympathy for Ponting - the only reason he wasn't LBW is the umpire thought he got an inside edge. If he reckons he didn't hit it then he was out LBW

jerry phoenix
07-18-2009, 06:02 PM
Aus will be playing for the draw this time. eng need to play twenty20 style, loads of quick runs and get Australia in before tea.

waylander
07-18-2009, 07:59 PM
England will want a lead of at least 450.
They seem to be making hard work of it at the moment

waylander
07-18-2009, 11:51 PM
Lead of over 500 and 2 days left.
Australia made over 600 in 2 days in the first test
Game on!

jerry phoenix
07-19-2009, 10:05 PM
cant believe how well aus came back. 200 odd to win and theyve still got five wickets. wow, i thought it would all be over today. ahh well i will have to endure a little more cricket tomorrow. i hope it doesnt go on too long, ive got work to do.

Flintoff is a god!

Sophia
07-20-2009, 04:26 PM
That was pretty amazing, especially his last wicket. All that build up, and he delivers, right on that final ball of the over. It's like something out of a book. :D

1-0. great historic win for eng. great battling from the opposition with a superb partnership from Clarke and Haddin. it is shaping up to be a great series.

All starts again tomorrow.
Is everybody ready?

Sophia
08-08-2009, 07:57 PM
Everyone still hanging in there? :)

The first innings were pretty terrible ("England weltering in an arsepit of horror" as Stephen Fry tweeted :D ) but I'm feeling quite optimistic about this next session. This may be a heady madness induced by TMS, which has been hilarious today. :) It's also been very pleasant watching cricket in the sunshine. This summer series has been great.

I want England to concentrate and show their mettle, win, lose or draw. I'd also love for Collingwood to be back to his earlier batting form and not go out for a duck again, so I can enjoy watching him for longer England can get a good partnership or two going and build up their self-esteem and morale back to pre-Headingley levels. :D

Sophia
08-08-2009, 09:23 PM
Phooey. :(

It all looked so hopeful at 57 - 0. At that point, I was worried that they'd keep up their calm, collected play, but lose their state of mind overnight. Now, at 78 - 5, it's all looking very low.

waylander
08-09-2009, 02:11 AM
It's all gone horribly wrong.
This is going to be an innings defeat for England to square the series

Sophia
08-09-2009, 03:26 PM
Ha ha ha! Go, Broad! And go, spectators!

It's all gone a bit bonkers now, hasn't it? What a fun morning! :D

jerry phoenix
08-20-2009, 07:32 PM
fifth and final test.

not terrible so far today, not great but could have been (has been) worse. cook should have done better. the worst thing eng can do is drop him now hes got his poor innins out of the way.

the weather isnt on englands side but hopefully the test will go to the last day with either side capable of winning it.

Sophia
08-20-2009, 07:36 PM
It's 200 - 4 at the moment. The morning felt slow and steady, and I prefer it's like this to the awful first day at Headingley (obviously). I hope they don't lose their cool and start taking risks before they can develop a decent score. I'm dreading Australia's innings; I'm imagining them totally outplaying England, unfortunately.

I really liked the spectators' reception for Trott. It's exactly how I was feeling, too, wanting to give him some encouragement for his first Test.

You have to get within 200 runs of the target to avoid the follow-on. They only need another 20-odd runs - I think they'll make it.

jerry phoenix
08-21-2009, 07:51 PM

332 looks like a pretty good score now!
England need to make another 200 tomorrow and then put the Aussies back in.
Forecast looks good for the rest of the match

Sophia
08-22-2009, 05:58 PM
This has been such a great Test. It's exactly what a five-day event should be, full of great ups and downs, surprises and emotion. Trott's first innings, Flintoff's last; Broad's rise, Collingwood's fall; Ponting being hit on the arse and having a good laugh about it; Ponting being hit in the mouth and Prior not taking his run but checking that Ponting was all right instead; the disappointment for Bopara and Monty; and as always, the good-natured and fun TMS commentary throughout. Fantastic stuff.

waylander
08-22-2009, 09:44 PM
Australia have a mountain to climb and two days to do it. The wicket is taking spin and England must be wishing they had Monty.

Sophia
08-23-2009, 05:48 PM
Ponting and Clarke run out - I'm still swearing my head off. :D Tears in my eyes - this is such incredible play. Until they went out, I was sure that Australia would actually get the record-breaking number of runs they needed, but now, I'm convinced England are going to win. :)

well done england on winning back the ashes. ElaraSophia, you are quite right to highlight the teriffic sportamanship displayed in this test. i cant beleive pontin took so many hits before he put on the helmet. wot a nutta!

great series. just showed how good the five day game is. limited overs cricket is exciting but it is nothing without the 'proper' game.
