Hi there everyone,

I'm not sure if there's a nice way of asking this so I'll just ask. Can diarrhea be a psychosomatic condition? Such that the person is experiencing so much stress and as a result. . .

Any help would be appreciated.

Why not? I believe any affliction can be psychosomatic. The mind is a powerful thing.

And I think stress is a cause for spastic bowel syndrome.

Just a note- "Psychosomatic" is a lot more complex than "it's all in your head."
Brain imaging is now showing physical, treatable neurological changes in patients with conditions like phantom-limb syndrome.

Technically speaking, disorders of the it's-all-in-your-head variety are termed somatization disorder, or to use an older term, somatic conversion, or even older, hysterical conversion. True psychosomatic disorders have both a physical and a psychological component.

Some patients do react to anxiety or stress by having loose bowels without any apparent physical cause. This is an example of somatization/somatic conversion.
