I've been playing an unhealthy amount of Masters of Orion 3. It gets a bad rep from most Masters of Orion 2 fans, and deservedly so. I mean, its completely different. In some ways, its much worse than MOO2. But in other ways, its much better.

Its also addictive as sin.

My forces are slowly pounding their way through the Silicon Empire. Each month, we bomb another planet. So far, we've killed about 50 billion Silicons...and their Emperor continues to refuse our demands for surrender.

Ah well.

Last game I played was Unreal: Return to Na Pali, I was so happy when I found out it worked on my laptop (which doesn't have a video card :P) and it plays better than my other computer! (seriously whats with that?)

Very nice!

After bombing another planet into dust, I moved on to play Prototype. Its actually really fun, and I actually rather like the way the plotline is conveyed entirely through a web of snippets that you have to piece together.

Also, shapeshifting is *always* fun.

Spamwise Hamgee spent a good portion of last night working on improving the quality of his legendary sword, "The Edge." I also escorted a friend from the Great Delving to the Redhorn Lodes, as he was in need of precious metals and ores.

My corward push has resulted in the capitulation of the Silicon Empire to my demands of unconditional surrender.

Pay up, crystalline biznitches!

For a game as fugly and hard to understand as MOO3, its surprisingly addictive....

Ok now that i got that out of my system. OH MY GOD! Back in 2000, I got cracked on MoO2 for almost 6 straight months man. I could beet the game on IMPOSSIBLE! when i discovered that they released MoO3, I almost pissed my pants. Went out and bought the game without reading ONE online review of it.

Popped it in, turned it on.... and I had real tears in my eyes after I played it for a day or two... I mean, what Where They Thinking when they designed the game... Did they Bother to play the thing? I keep a copy of MoO2 on my computer just for nostalgia purposes, and to this day, MoO3 just pisses me off so bad that they did that to the series. I found the game almost completely unplayable, and I've played some crappy games in my day!

Anyway, not to down on you personally, I just have fairly strong, (perhaps requiring professional help lol) feelings about that series of game.

To answer the thread topic question. I have gotten away from online games almost completely, though i WILL play fallen-earth when they eventually finish it. I've been playing Warhammer 40k DaW2 and sins of a solar empire when i just want to vegetate my brain matter and go click click click for an hour..

I'm a HUGE fan of the fall out series and I'd love to write a movie adaptation of the game one day. Have to get Mel Gibson to play the Main Character's father though! Road Warrior baby!

I'm keeping an eye out for a few games due out in the next year or two, but i'm too lazy atm to look up their titles.... I need to do some troubleshooting on my computer... get a new CPU cooler or a new power supply, my computer randomly shuts down under heavy load so I've been keeping the game play to a minimal and just working on my book now that I've discovered rules to help me with the crafting of my art. :)

me and the wife almost bought an Xbox just for GoW2. We borrowed a system from a friend and beet the game in a couple days. That was some good fun. My wife loves FPSs, and it really irks the crap out of her when I score higher than her almost always and have Less kills... Head Shots Pow, ching, Pow, ching!

Hey, I think you should try MOO3. Get the fan patches, and go in with different expectations. Its not MOO2. Its nothing LIKE MOO2. Once you get used to it, though, its really entertaining.

Anyway, not to down on you personally, I just have fairly strong, (perhaps requiring professional help lol) feelings about that series of game. Did you play MOO1? Because "that they did that to the series" is pretty inaccurate. MOO3 is a lot more similar to MOO1 than to MOO2. Heck, it's closer to MOO1 than than MOO2 was. I agree that there were a lot of bad things about MOO3, mostly caused by the publisher rushing the game to gold status when it would've still needed about half a year of debugging. But with the fan mods & bugfixes it's simply awesome now.
The fact that it's not a Civ-Style Micromanagment hell, and more of a space empire game was a design decision, and a very good one imo. It's what the MOO series started out as, the people who expected MOO2.5 mostly didn't play MOO1.

Let me hug you dude! Far too few people appreciate the gem that MOO3 truly is. Best 4X space game ever. Well, i hope not ever, but definitly so far, with no replacement in sight.
(GalCiv? Puh-leeze. That game's got all the strategic and tactical depth of a Sahara puddle)

Zoombie

I actually kinda liked Gal Civ 2...I mean, yeah, its not all that complicated, but its fun and its funny.

Lhun
06-20-2009, 05:03 AM
Well, complicated is a negative word. ;)
But seriously, the combat system alone is a joke. You have three different types of weapons and armor, and then the whole thing is based on a vague rock scissors stone principle, and comparing a single number for offense with a single number for defense? That's not even simple, that's bullshit. At least 90% of the fun (and strategic depth) of 4X space games like MOO or Imperium Galactica comes from designing ships that can beat your opponent effectively (Which is actually the one thing MOO3 and MOO3 had in common). I mean, there is such a thing as too simple. I know dumbification to appeal to an as broad as possible audience is the current trend in gaming, but i do not applaud it. There are more calculations going into a single MOO3 ship shooting another ship once, than go into a whole battle in GalCiv 2. It looks quite nice, the Space Station are actually a pretty cool idea, and the AI is amazingly good. But the game as a whole? I played it for about 15 hours. It kind of felt like spore. You get promised a game with unprecendented scope, the possibility for limitless depth, and modern graphics. And when you try it out, you see it's really a mildly amusing 3D editor and a few arcade games to use your create in, the likes of which i've played on the friggin' Commodore 64 over a decade ago. Before i descent into full rant-mode, this (http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?) sums up my opinion of the the current gaming industry pretty much. :D

But not to be only negative, there is always a light at then end of the tunnel, and it's not always a trian.
If you like strategy games with strategic depth, check out Dominions 3 (http://www.shrapnelgames.com/Illwinter/DOM3/DOM3_page.html). Do it. Go ahead and download the demo right now. That game is made of sheer awesome, which is even more amazing since it was made completely by two finnish dudes in their spare time. I'll point out it has a rather steep learning curve, especially if you just jump in without some directions, but it's the only strategy game i've seen so far that inspired people to roleplay in the forumthreads for multiplayer games, or write page-long after action reports.

Just don't try to play it without the newest patch. With the patch it works perfectly fine, the out of box version is more like a beta.

I've been playing Prototype all day. Its got a lot of appeal in the "brain dump" kind of way. visceral and fast paced! Its got a lot of GTA feel to it.. very good game imho....

I need a bigger power supply for my PC because I have to under clock my GTX280 in order to keep the computer from randomly shutting off :(

I agree about prototype, there is just so much that they did well and spot on with the game. The plot work is exceptional for games these days. I'm really looking forward to playing the game all the way through.

or to the people that Bother with trying to be creative. Most of the time today when that happens through the conglomerate of corporate schedules and production demands most of the creativity in gaming is dumbed down to the absolute lowest common denominator. Sad, but true. A friend of mine that lives in LA just started working in the Activision studio that produced most of the call of duties, after working in the industry for over a year now is pretty cynical about the process. Though moving to Activision was a breath of fresh air for the man. I can't wait to get to tour the place as a guest. I'd love to perfect my writing enough to be able to pitch a game to the company. I'd love to have a job as a storyboard writer for a major video game like activision. Once I start at UC Irvine i'll see whats up with being able to indy proposal activision to make my dream.

First, you play as an ADORABLICIOUS CHIBIOVERLORD who stomps around and terrorizes other small children.

Then you grow up and have to build your army of goblins...by clubbing baby seals to death.

Then PETA Elves show up.

Then you club THEM to death!

Wild Arms, although I'm about to finish it after all these years. We recently got lucky and found someone who sold us a 60 GB P;aystation 3. I quickly discovered that with the PS3, you can download original Playstation games. I obviously grabbed all fo the RPGs (and Jumping Flash, what a twisted game that was). I had never finished wild Arms so I set about doing so. It's held up remarkably well despite the weeble-looking battle graphics. )

I'm playing Mass Effect and, really, I'm impressed with it! Far more than I expect!

I mean, the universe is based off ONE magic rule: Element Zero creates a field that changes based off electric charge. If you put a positive current through it, it increases the mass of everything around it. If you put a negative current through it, it makes everything have less mass.

Everything else is based on that idea, and its all...really sound, scientifically speaking! Its a really really GOOD sci-fi universe!

My only complaint is the clothes.

I mean, skintight clothes on girls is cool, but...dosn't it get kinda uncomfortable?

Also, the characters are all good (Despite the bad guy being a bit one dimensional) and the combat is fun. Oh and the Normandy is really cool :D

Biotics and the force are totally different.

One is a hokey religion that makes no real sense if you look at it, and the other is consistent semi-scientific power thingy.

And Specters are not *cops*. Cops have due process and limits. Specters are more like general all purpose agents, who do what the Council mandates.

The Jedi are semi-autonomous (though it appears that they will listen to the Republic when they feel like it) and have more of a diplomatic outlook.

Also, Specters have awesome awesome awesome guns.

Wild Arms was great. I beat it back in the 90s, but not without scouring the internet for strategies (we had dial-up back then, ouch). The puzzles in the later parts of that game are HARD!

Try Champions, Return to Arms--the sequel with twice the scenes and excusions. You should try the Tactics mod (http://weidu.org/tactics.html) for BG2 and ToB. Forces you to use a party instead of just soloing (where possible) your way through.

Speaking of that, I still enjoy going back and soloing BG2 on the harder difficulty settings with various odd classes. The kensai/mage dual-class is overpowered for BG2, so try that with your first solo game. Start as kensai, then dual to mage at 9 or 12. If you want to own up ToB solo, you'll need something that scales better at high experience.

And don't forget the fixpack (http://www.gibberlings3.net/bg2fixpack/).

I'm climbing the learning curve on Sins of a Solar Empire. It's been quite a while since I played any real time strategy games, but this one is shaping up to be pretty fun. It's got more depth than Starcraft, but seems pretty well balanced. PC Gamer loved it (editor's choice at about 91%, IIRC)

I haven't done a whole lot beyond familiarizing myself with the interface, but apparently the game can be won either by blowing stuff up or developing your culture to the point where they just surrender to you. The economy has a lot of depth. The tech tree is huge (game of the year edition came with a largish poster as a reference).

If you broke down in tears when Blizzard pushed the release date of Starcraft II out to 2010, this might be worth a look.

Still PBEM-ing in War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition. I'm the little Solar Empire of the Rising Sun and we seem to have taken the blowing up stuff approach. No sign of anyone surrendering though I can now refuel a fleet or two in Borneo from time to time. Maybe the Emperor is impressed.

We need some new games at our house. The last ones we bought were those SingStar games. Me and the kids played them just for the fun of it. Of course, I have tons of games I never finished; some I never even started or if I did, got frustrated and quit.

I used to be able to play complicated games that required me to figure out puzzles and solve mysteries. But since I got sick this last time, I can't seem to concentrate. I need to go try some of our games and not just throw the controller in frustration when I don't get through on the first try. I'm used to the games being easy for me to figure out. Now that I'm having trouble, I'm easily frustrated.

I'm curious as to see your other Top Five in terms of story and setting, Dommo.

All I know is that Bioshock sucker punched me SO fucking hard with its plot twist that I ran downstairs and raved at my entire family about how fucking amazing it was.

And the thing is, I had gone in expecting a twist! I had played System Shock 2, I knew they were sneaky.

But they were EXTRA sneaky. They added that bit in, that emotionally manipulative bit that actually made me feel really bad for mistrusting Atlas then BOOM!

Its like...

Whoa...

I could rave for hours at how good Bioshock's story was, in terms of writing and composition and sheer philosophical depth.

And, it gets giant kudos for me for basically being a giant FUCK YOU to Ayn Rand and her crazy flunkies.

I think the best way to take a grox planet is not to fight them in combat, but to terraform their planets while they are still on them. Their armor and weapons don't help them when they are choking in the wrong atmosphere. You can even eventually capture a grox planet now and then without them blowing up their cities. Then you can get their weapons. Guess what? their planet killers are just big terraforming bombs, only terraforming in the other direction. As long as your ship is faster than theirs, even low quality shields will work. Just don't bother taking any allies with you, because they won't make it back.

Vivi wouldn't have made any sense as he's not a main protagonist or antagonist in IX. >_> But then, I am a bit disappointed they used Shantotto instead of Lion or even Aldo to represent XI. Shantotto is awesome (and she trash talks you in the actual game too lol), but she's from Windurst while Lion is from Norg and plays a part in every nation's story. Not that I mind the Windy bias, that was my home city. The music is so nostalgic...I spent two years of my life playing XI, don't regret a moment of it.

But either way, I do have a lot of fun playing as my all time favorite FF character so I can't really complain that much.

At the moment I'm playing with Dead Space. I don't think so Dragon Age is that brutal. :)

Dead Space was a pushover and not very scary to boot.

No, the games it ripped off were scarier and harder and more creative.

Dead Space was a pushover and not very scary to boot.Wait. I never said it's scary, just much more brutal. I was trained on System Shock 2 and it's digital psycho Napoleon, Shodan and on Aliens vs. Predator's Marine section. So, for me Dead Space is not scary at all. :) I said brutal and I considered Dead Space as much more brutal then Dragon Age. That was a horror program after all. :)

I also started DA and you was right. It's a damned good program and also very addictive. I started it at 1am, then I realized it's 5am already.

Oooh, I just realized we're thinking of a different kind of brutality.

You're thinking graphics and visual ideas.

I'm thinking of difficulty. Cause, well, Dragons Age has some really really REALLY hard parts too it, in terms of combat and stuff.

No. I never care about the graphic, only the atmosphere.

Still playing Demon's Souls. Killed my first archdemon last night, it was epic. Then went to kill a second and got my ass handed to me in two minutes flat...and that's while doing coop with a friend. >_<

Ah well, it's really not so bad once you get used to the gameplay. I mean, if I can do it anyone can lol, as I don't usually play action games, RPG or otherwise. I'm upgrading some of my equipment before I go after anything else, I'm sooo close to getting the final upgrade of one of my bows. Then I need to find a better sword or pick one to upgrade.

I am planning on picking up Dragon Age soon, for the record. Maybe if this week's holiday bonus is decent...

It's still a 2D turn-based JRPG, but all of the graphics are hi-resolution and very pretty, the game takes advantage of the PSP's widescreen aspect ratio, and the system has been tuned so that you don't have to spend hours beating up your own dudes just to boost their hit points.

Assassin's Creed 2. Finally beat it last night. Still haven't gone through and gotten all of the achievements. Overall a great game, though. Storyline is very deep, layered, and pretty cool...especially their take on...nevermind. No spoilers here, though. You gotta beat it (and make sure you get all 30 of the codex pages encrypted and back to the Villa Auditore before starting the final mission, or you won't get to enjoy the "real" ending) to find out.

Still, my game of the year (and of the past few years) is Uncharted 2, though AC2 is up there with one of the best of this year.

Replaying Bioshock. Still a good game but doesn't hold up as well as I expected on a second playthrough. (Could make an unfavorable comparison to SS2, mentioned above, here.)

Among other fairly recent video games played, I want to say:

- NWN2: mediocre and far too long, but not bad
- NWN2 MotB: awesome story with disappointing endings
- Borderlands: good Diablolike game
- Assault on Dark Athena: not as good as Butcher Bay

For other games:

- Space Hulk: damn good for a board game, endlessly replayable with high quality parts, but expensive
- D&D 4ed: hate what it did to casters, love what it did for melee
- Rogue Trader: an improvement to Dark Heresy that, among other things, makes psykers playable (as opposed to suicidal)

SPMiller
01-20-2010, 05:22 PM
An example of how shitty spellcasting was in Dark Heresy:

Psykers had to throw at least two ten-sided dice for each spell cast. Each die had a 10% chance of forcing a roll on a table of various horrible disasters, and that roll had a 25% chance of forcing a roll on an even worse table of disasters, some of which would wipe out the party. It was not uncommon for players to attack and kill their party psyker if she ever tried to use her powers.

Rogue Trader solves this problem by adding rules for casting weaker spells without destroying the party.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. What can I say, I love assassins. I think I'm about halfway through the story, probably a bit less. There's so much stuff to do and Rome is such a huge environment that I'm spending hours just doing side missions and rebuilding the city. And blowing up Borgia towers. :p

I'm kind of surprised Altair hasn't made an appearance yet via Bleeding Effect. Maybe my memory's fuzzy but the way they set it up in the second game made it seem like Altair (and now Ezio) have more or less become part of Desmond, in more than just DNA. Like how Desmond keeps referring to himself even when he's talking about Ezio. Still plenty of story left for him to pop up in, though. Maybe. Not much going on outside of the Animus, that's for sure.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. Almost done with it...only have one or two "memories" to go. Pretty good so far. It's nearly just like AC2, but with a few minor improvements (like being able to build up a cabal of assassins and call them to kill people in really cool ways).

Before that, I played Force Unleashed 2 which is probably the worst game I've played all year. It was a lot like my last relationship. Looked great and had the potential to be totally awesome, but was way too short, felt like a lot was missing, and left me incredibly unsatisfied.

I was pretty far behind everyone else cause of schoolwork so I've spent the last two weeks catching up. I finished the story and NG+ mode, which gives you better gear.

Now I'm just deciding what to do next. No matter what I do it's going to be grinding in some form, meh. But I do need to upgrade my equipment, as I'm the only one of my static party who is capable of tanking. I like tanking, I just don't have any gear for it heh. Empire: Total War. Awesome game. Just finished playing as Spain, trying (and miserably failing) at Prussia H/H right now.

That's a tough game. I just got Gary G's War in the East

I couldn't face the Germanic hordes so I invented a relatively peaceful
April 1942 scenario and put most of the German army on "STATIC" and
cut their administrative points so that they can't do much.

And with the Germans calm and happy, I can tour the fronts with STAVKA and figure out how to play the game.

That's a tough game.Didn't actually think so before, when i played as Spain or France. Rome: TW was harder even playing as a Roman Faction. But Prussia is the hardest faction i've seen in any TW game so far. Though i suspect United Provinces might be even harder, considering their units are worse and they're even smaller than Prussia. Though on the other hand, they need to defend less area and make loads of money with trade.

I played Austria, Russia, France and the Ottomans, cuz they looked easy.
As the Austrians, I really hated France since their army would just flatten me seemingly at will. When I finally beat the French -- I was entrenched and there was a lot of Austrian cleverness -- there was joy in Vienna. No battle after that was quite as much fun.
I don't think I ever actually won anything. I did beat the French that one time though.
