A casual buddy of mine insisted today, upon finding out that I'm a Laker fan (I try to keep that a little low key down here as everyone hates LA) and a Dallas Cowboys fan that I must also be a Yankees fan so I can be a fan of the most hated franchises in each sport.

I actually don't care much for baseball, but I know his logic is sound. By that reasoning, who should I have cheered for in Hockey this past season so I can be ready next year? And hell, while we're at it, can my international brethren point me to the most notorious futbol/football/soccer club so I can root for them too?

I need to stop procrastinating and go the distance with being an ambassador to every evil empire in each league. Thanks, everyone, for your assistance...

I believe you have no choice but to be a Red Wings fan.

Srsly.

eta: Oh, and by the way, you can root for them tomorrow night in game 7. :)

I was actually hoping that would be the case since I knew they were still in it and seemed like the more unlikable / bullyish team compared to Pittsburgh. Excellent.

Of course, I'm trusting that you're not just trying to lure me astray, sir. If I find out your franchise is actually comprised of a bunch of lovable gents and has a history of employing good sports with humble spirits I'll be greatly disappointed...

I'd guess Red Wings (because of their recent dominance) or Flyers, but I'm kinda far from the ice at this point.

I used to like the Cowboys (they were my fifth favorite as a boy - I had a hierarchy for the whole league) - but that was back when Tom Landry and Roger Staubach were around.

Man, how do you get the Cowboys and the Lakers in the same house? Might as well start following Manchester United and Collingwood too... (yeah, I know; "who's Collingwood?" -- they're Aussie Rules -- the most famous football club in the world... within a 2km-square area of Melbourne.)

See, this is good for me to know, in case I'm overseas. I want to be well rounded.

Incidentally, I was born into the Lakers / Cowboys fandom. Dad was a fan so I was. Never questioned it, I just came out the womb bleeding the colors my old man wears...

Not a chance.

In hockey I think you'd be more of a Canadiens fan. You seem to like the flashy teams, and in hockey the flashy team is the Canadiens.

Do we even HAVE a sports forum? (leave it to the talking fish peen to know these things)

Anyhow...

As far as hockey goes....dude. Do you really have to ask? Red Wings, of course! I've been a Detroit Red Wings fan since waaaay back when they sucked and used to be called the Detroit Dead Things.

It's gotta be the Wings, all the way.

Just checked with my husband, the foremost authority of hated teams of all kinds (he is a well rounded New England sports fan, therefore knows who to hate) and without hesitation he also replied

CANADIENS

No.No.No. He has to be a fan of the Canadiens. They are the only team. He can hate Toronto all he wants. In fact, he should make it his life's mission to hate the Leafs.

Go with the Wings. I started cheering for them back when they were the worst team in the league, just to annoy my neighbours in Montreal.

I also think Hawthorn's better than Collingwood.

See, following LA / Cowboys precedent, the team needs to have great-but-controversial-borderline-unlikable players in their history (Kobe, early Magic when he got his coach fired, Michael Irvin, Hollywood Henderson, etc.), be at the very least the 2nd most successful franchise in league history (LA and Dallas are both 2nd to Boston & Pittsburgh respectively) and, of course, be the absolute most hated franchises in their league (everyone hates the Cowboys, and no other team in the NBA gets the equivalent of the "Beat LA" chant that the Lakers get even in games where they aren't playing).

These are the basic criteria folks. Help me out here... I don't want to start cheering Detroit in Game 7 only to find out I shouldn't have...

Btw, I fairly recently found out that hockey live and in person is awesome. I caught a minor league game in SA some time back & it reminded me of when I briefly wanted be a hockey goalie in junior high...
