Hey! Can anybody connect me with resources involving detective work?

In particular, I'd like to read about all the different branches typically found
within a Criminal Investigation Department. I know the easy ones
(i.e. homicide and narcotics).

Thanks!

Your question covers a lot of ground. A large department, such as Los Angeles or NYC, would have seperate divisions for Robery Homicide, Burglary, Narcotics, Auto theft, gangbangers, Organized Crime, Juveniles, and probably several others I've missed.
Small cities and towns join task forces, and are assisted by State and Federal agencies, for the big crimes. Their detectives investigate all serious crimes as the occur.

Thanks for the reply, RJK. Those details are helpful. I've got a lot of research to do. Living in a foreign country makes it a little more difficult.

A larger city department will generally have divisions devoted to:

Homicide
Vice (narcotics and prostitution)
Robbery (some departments have separate divisions to deal with Auto Theft)

Some departments will have divisions devoted to:

Fraud (sometimes called "Bunko")
Domestic Disturbance
Special Victims (dealing with sex crimes and children)
