GET OUT OF THE WAY!

Yes, I've bought my first car and I thought you all deserved a warning.

In case your interested, it's 1.3 litres of Fiesta that looks like this:
fiestag.jpg

And before you say it looks old... well, it is. In fact, she's nearly 17. But she just drove from Edinburgh to Aberdeen (In three hours) and didn't miss a beat.

I'm thrilled, and thought I'd start a thread about it.

Thoughts, comments, insults and lockings welcome :D

Hmmm, this may be a stupid question, but I didn't see the rings where you hook the horses up to it.

Sigh. It's just too easy.

Just kidding. I hope you enjoy it . . . and that it doesn't cost you too much to keep running.

By the way, this was my first car:

(Not a picture of my actual car, but I had one very similar.)

The thing was rear-wheel drive with a f/r weight distribution of about 60/40 . . . which meant driving it fast in the rain or snow was like driving a hockey puck.

Dear god, the front end looks like a challenger!

That's a hell of a first car, sir.

There's really no need to rub it in ;)

The big plus on mine is that her heart is a 'pushrod' engine; so it's virtually bombproof.

And the gearbox isn't bad either :)

It had hidden headlights, but I always though it looked better with the headlights exposed.

This was back in the days before electronic ignition, which meant you had to change the spark plugs quite often. On a 327 Camaro with A/C that was like trying to repair the Hubble telescope.

I wish I had kept it. Those things are worth a small fortune now.

I really do hope you enjoy your "new" car.

My mother sold her Fiesta to a collector a few years ago.

True story.

This was my first car. Not *this* car, but same make/model. Mine was red, though. So sporty! Thing was a manual and got excellent mpg, though. Called it the Jenmobile. :D

Assuming you don't mind me half-way hijacking your thread . . .

I had one of these when I was going to college. A 1973 Opel Manta Rally (mine had a matte black hood, but mine was the same body style and color).

Not the prettiest car in the world, but I loved that thing. I drove it hard and it never failed me.

A name'll come to you. :D My dad had some old beast of a car, some really old Detriot monster that waddled down the road when it got going over 45 miles per hour. We called it the Duck, but it sort of named itself, didn't it? LOL

Wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happens with your new-to-you car, too.

One thing about having a manual; I think it makes someone a better driver. You have to be involved with driving the car more, and not be as passive as you can be with an automatic.

Since I buy mid-size sedans now, my last manual car was a 1988 Honda. An automatic is more convenient, but I sometimes miss not driving a manual anymore.

Don't be absurd.

Good God, man, did you only own good-looking cars?

In a similar vein I was inches away from having an Alfa GTV as my first car.

Starting a discussion about "my first car" is a little like starting a discussion about "my first dog," or "my first kiss," or "my first little girlfriend" . . . some of us automatically start reminiscing about the past.

Or maybe it's just me.

I test-drove an automatic, it was infuriating.

It never changed down as soon as you'd want it to before a turn.

But then it was a Pug and hence ... well ... with the best will in the world ... French.

Congrats!

My first was an old little Honda that quickly lost its 3rd gear. No problem, really, in a 5-speed :D Man, I drove that thing forever and never did need 3rd. I might've preferred 3rd a few times, sure, but I'm not too picky.
