What has been your experience with them?

Does anyone know if there is a site with a directory of short story competitions?

Also, has anyone entered the Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition? And is it a legit competition? http://www.shortstorycompetition.com/

Hi MaLanie!

You could try these as a start...

http://www.firstwriter.com/competitions
http://www.fictionfactor.com/contests.html
http://www.prizemagic.co.uk/html/writing_comps.htm (UK contests)

Although, since most contests ask for an entry fee, and the prizes are often not that amazing, I'd be tempted to just submit stories to magazines instead - usually no fees, no deadlines, and every one published is a winner :)

[Aside: This isn't really for you, since I'm sure you're well aware, but if you google something along the lines of 'writing competitions', many of the sponsored adverts are for copyright services. Your work is copyrighted the moment it's in fixed form - you don't need to pay to copyright your short story. Vultures . End aside]

Sorry, I can't help you with the Hemingway competition, my computer isn't well today and the internet keeps falling over!

Thanks Polly! I don't understand the whole copyright thing yet. In this Hemingway competition they do state that the author keeps all rights to the work. I don't even have a clue to what that means!

I never thought of a magazine. What kind of mags take short stories?

Writer's Market lists all the literary magazines. Poets & Writers magazine lists contests. Quite a few contests have had scandals wherein the winners are somehow associated with the judges - if you decide to enter one, google its history.

Yeah, the contest racket is known for some shady dealings. Not saying they 'all' do it.

IMHO, the more legit contests have submission guidelines that 'hide' the name of the authors. But yeah, check the history.

Personally, I think you are better off just submitting to magazines and ezines.

But there is no harm in submitting for the contests if you can afford the entry fees ranging from $2 - $20 dollars. Doesn't take too many before you are spending $100s.
