This article (http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/may/02/jk-rowling-charles-dickens-ts-elliot-books-writing)is a helpful reminder that many of the great novelists of the past did not make their living at it. Some few were independently wealthy, but most had a day job. The career novelist is a modern (from about the 19th century) phenomenon and, argues the author of the article, possibly a dated one.

Writing for it's own sake may be coming back into vogue.
