I ran across some articles that said a horse could travel 20 miles in a day, 30 at the most. That seems awfully short. A person walking can cover more than that. So my question -

What is a reasonable day's distance for a saddled (western) horse carrying a rider but a minimal amount of gear?

How many days would it take to cover 100 miles - with a favorite horse that you aren't going to abuse by over-extending it?

Thanks a bunch for any answers. Puma

Thanks, Firedrake - that worked like a charm - 20 to 100 :) Actually, I pretty much found what I wanted to know - the 20 to 30 does appear to be pretty realistic when you factor in terrain, availability of water, etc. I'm glad you knew where the thread was. Puma

Never did the walking but did do long distance bicycling. Same results. Puma

Thanks, Mac. That was a terrific link - just what I was looking for. I'm not a horseperson (so why am I writing a western? :)) Puma

By my observation, the limiting factor often isn't the horse. It's quite often how thick the rider's posterior calluses are.
