CURRENTLY EDITING FOR READABILITY. PLEASE FORGIVE ME FOR THE BAD FORMAT/

Last night I read an email written by a publicist. Thought you might like to read it. Just reading this had me thinking a lot. What I really want for my book is attention, and I'd do almost anything to get it. I don't really care if my book is bestseller or not.

You probably want as many people to know about your business,
product, movie, book, poem or short story so if you have ever
thought about reaching a worldwide audience on Oprah, now is the
time.

However, you do not have to be a famous author or celebrity to
be a guest on the number one TV talk show for the last 10 years.

Read further to find out how you can become famous by being on
her show.

You might be thinking why would Oprah talk to me, since I am not
a famous celebrity or I have not done anything important.
Well, I have wonderful news for you.

In the next few minutes I will show you how to promote your
book, poems, short stories, etc. on The Oprah Winfrey Show
because I'm one of the top PR experts on the planet.

You can get on Oprah even if you are not a household name.
Dozens of unknown authors and guests have gotten on her show.
They did it by hiring a $5,000 per month publicist.

Let me tell you that having a publicist is great but it's not
the only way to get publicity.

Why would Oprah be interested in you?

Well, actually she is not. She is interested in attracting more
viewers. The more viewers that turn on their TV and watch her
show means more money in her pocket.
I have read stories about unknown authors selling one million
books after one appearance. Oprah has tens of millions of
viewers.
Okay. Now let us get you booked on the Queen of Talk. All you
have to do is go to www.oprah.com and about half way down her
site is a link that says, Share Your Story/Be on the Show.

Click on this link and you will be taken to a dozen or
so upcoming stories that they need guests for.
Once producers read your profile...and if... they are interested
they will call you and send you their FEDEX account number and
request your press kit and book.

Since you don't have a relationship with TV producers this is
the absolute best way to go.

It's much easier to tie your story or book into a topic they are
covering then to try and pitch your book.

Let's face it. About 10,000 other authors are going to Oprah's
site everyday so it's hard (but not impossible) to get on her
show that way but at least a producer's assistant will read your
profile.

Out of all the books published each year most will lose the
author or publisher lots of money i.e. expenses for printing,
editing, binding, proofing, distribution, etc. can ruin a good
book even before it gets finished.

Here is Another $1 Million Dollar Secret Most Authors
Do not Know!

I really can not believe that I am sharing this highly-guarded
secret with you. Anyway, here it is.

A few years ago I had a client who wrote a book on fraud and
identity theft. Well, he got a few interviews and he sold a few
books.

But, after really talking to him I discovered that he grew up
with 6 sisters and his family had only one bathroom.

He jokingly said that he can count the times on one hand that he
was able to use the bathroom.

We pitched women magazines, parenting magazines, gossip columns
and he sold a ton of books. Why?

Most of these publications didn't care about his book on
fraud yet they wanted to hear his stories about growing up.
And during the interview he would talk about his book and since
the listeners laughed and felt good they bought from him.
People are going to buy your personality as much as they will
buy your book.

If you come across as warm, personable, and loving you can write
a book about aliens and make it a bestseller.
As you probably know people buy things for emotional reasons.
I would bet that 90% of the people who bought his book weren't
concerned about fraud.

Don't get me wrong...you can get publicity based on your book
but if that's all you rely on you will leave tons of money on
the table and be stuck with boxes of unsold books.

Believe me I know.

It seems as though every celebrity, Fortune 500 CEO, and athlete
has written a book and their $5,000 a month publicists are
making sure that they are on the front page and evening talk
shows everyday.

You see, the dirty secret in PR is your success is based on
relationships. If a book reviewer or editor does not know you
they will not spend time with you.

I have reporters and journalists who write about my clients
because they owe me favors. Why do they owe me favors? ( I can
not believe that I told you this.)

Maybe I provided a last minute guest. Maybe I submitted a great
article and met their deadline. The bottom line in this industry
is one hand washes the other. Period!

Have you ever wondered why you can not crack the code and get
major publicity? I am not talking about an interview in
Boonville, AR where only cows will hear you talk about your
book.

I am talking about Fox News, OReilly Factor, CNN, 20/20, 700
Club, USA Today, Essence, Woman's World, and others.
My clients have gotten interest from all of these media. And
they sell a truckload of books.

This is a roadmap to success. Find a few topics that interest
you and fill out the email form. It is that simple. You might
not think that this strategy works you couldnt be more
wrong.

Who Needs Publicity?

1) Any author or writer with writings or books.
2) Someone who wants more writing assignments.
3) Do you want more speaking engagements?
4) Do you want more visitors to your website?
5) Do you want more leads?
6) Writer who wants a book deal or looking for an agent.
One appearance on a major talk show will have agents and
publishers beating a path to your door and calling you.
I bet that you would like to get top-notch publicity from a real
expert who has been featured in Entrepreneur Magazine, Wall St.
Journal, National Enquirer, Chicago Tribune, and USA Today I
have a special offer for you.

Take a look at what I have done for a few of my clients:

How would you like a cash-producing PR weapon that. . .

Drives hundreds, maybe thousands of visitors and buyers to your
website in just days.

Makes your local business the talk of your town and the place to
go to buy your product or service (no matter how much
competition you have!)

Explode the number of products you are selling by 100x!

Let's you increase the price of your products and services and
still beat your competition . . . hands down!

Sending mass press releases does not work. If it did every
author would have a bestseller.

You need to create different angles, different approaches, and
most importantly you need connections inside the media.

If you're interested in having an affordable and top publicity
firm represent you to thousands of media outlets contact us
today.

Since I don't have any money, and I have an unfinished book to think about, I thought I'd pass it on to someone else. What would you guys think? Would you be interested in publicity on your book?

you martyr and shine.
Blue, money flows to the author. This publicist is looking for a fool to pay him $5,000/mo. with no guarantee (or even likelyhood) that he can get them a spot on Oprah.

I'm one of the top PR experts on the planet.
The top PR expert "on the planet" is not spamming for rubes, I assure you.

I'd ask why, if this guy is so good, he needs to send out spam of this nature.

So many 'red flags' in that email that I don't know where to start.

And no, he can't put your book on Oprah. He told you how you may be able to (which anyone on the planet can if they have internet access).

They're contacting--out of the blue--a writer who doesn't even have a finished book, let alone a publishing contract in hand.

They're making bold claims that have no verifiable facts. (Free exposure on Oprah? That could mean one of their clients was in the studio audience).

Sounds like nothing more than spam to me. My advice is to delete and ignore.

What Haggis said. I'd run. Fast.

What I really want for my book is attention, and I'd do almost anything to get it.

That makes you an easy target for scam artists. They know that the more you want the dream they're selling, the more money you're willing to pay.

Like Devil said, top publicists are not spamming on the Internet for rubes. You can't even get on their client lists.

Run away fast.

No. He SAYS he can put your book on Oprah.

Also, this was apparently an UNSOLICITED EMAIL. Was this sent to you? Do you have any clue how he got your email address?

There are many copies of this guy's crap on the Web.

By searching a different phrase, I got to this thread on another forum. It's over four years old, but:
http://forums.writersweekly.com/viewtopic.php?t=4060
if that's any indication, the guy has his name or something on Google Alerts, we can expect the guy to show up in this thread or PM me and/or MacAllister demanding my post or this thread be deleted. Cook your popcorn, folks...

And Haggis, please don't hold back, tell us all how you REALLY feel...

You probably want as many people to know about your business, product, movie, book, poem or short story so if you have ever thought about reaching a worldwide audience on Oprah, now is the time.
Or sculpture, painting, graffito, homemade cheeseball, paperclip collection, hole you dug in your backyard, and so on. How could you believe this was legitimate? It's time to arm yourself against your own naivete so you don't fall victim to scams. Keep in mind the adage: if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Although paying this dude to promote my personal homemade cheeseball collection on Oprah hardly feels too good to be true.

Get a good spam filter and if anything comes through unsolicited from someone you don't know, delete it immediately and without prejudice.

This reeks of scam and spam. If he can't even be bothered to personalize a letter, how can he get something on Oprah?

... Keep in mind the adage: if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

I disagree.

I would say: If it sounds too good to be true, it is.

I bet this guy has a cousin in Nigeria - you know the chap whose uncle died leaving a mountain of money in an old bank account...........

This was sent to my inbox this week, and I came across this last night while reading AW subscription threads at 3am.

I have NO idea how this guy got my email, and I have absolutely no clue where all the spam came from.

Would this guy threaten to sue if he came here reading this?
