Converting .AVI to....?

Yes, me again.

I recently got a Flip Mino digital video camera. I recorded part of my nieces' birthday party (they just turned 3) and wanted to put it on a CD or DVD for my sister.

It plays fine on my computer, but when I go to put it on a CD or DVD (I've tried both), it won't play on either her computer or in a DVD player. I admit I don't know how to convert video files. Is there a way I can convert these files (they're .avi) to something DVD-compatible?

Sometimes Google searches work with dial-up. Sometimes they don't. Earlier today, they didn't.

(I live in the boonies. I think the end of the Earth is just over the next hill. Dial-up is all I can get out here.)
