Just wondering about the variety of day jobs we have here. Obviously, some of us are full-time writers, but I bet that's the minority. So...I know we've got a firefighter (Brady), Melina works a late shift somewhere, and I'm an optician.

What do you do? What's the most interesting job you've ever had? The worst job? Past jobs welcome, too :)

Can I tell you my worst job???

When I was a teenager, I worked as a sacker at Kroger. Only we weren't called sackers. We were "courtesy clerks". (I guess that is the politically correct term?) Anyway, it was HORRIBLE. Low pay, moronic bosses, and of course, the customers were the worst.

"Do you want paper or plastic?"

"Double paper inside of plastic."

"What the hell?????"

I did that for a couple of years. I thank God every day that I no longer have to do that. But it did build character.....or so my dad told me.

hmmm, my current job. Let's see, one of my friends and sometimes co-worker says, "for someone without a job, you sure work a lot".

I am a pmlr, that's government speak for substitute post master in a very small post office. I work Saturday mornings, and any day she wants off, or needs to go to a meeting. I also 'loan out' to other post offices (only small ones) to work extra hours and make more money. During the school months I substitute (only at our little school, I don't loan out for that) for teachers and the secretary. It's only two jobs, but sometimes it keeps me hopping.

And it really blows people's mind when they see me at school working one day, they know I work at the post office on Saturday, and stop by the Calvin or Atwood post office on their way to Ada and see me working again.

Non-paying jobs don't count right?

Worst job ever? For me was working in a factory sewing ladies sleep and loungewear.

Neat thread, Blue - thanks.

What I do now: first priority, pretend I'm a mom; second, write; oh - I'm married too and that's a job for sure (no intention on quitting though)

Most interesting: this is a hard question! What people think is interesting and what I found/find interesting often aren't the same. What others think was interesting: my work at a children and family mental health agency; what I thought was most interesting: working in a gan (kids' nursery school) on a tri-lingual Israeli kibbutz where I was fluent in only one of the languages and so bad in the others that even a three year old wanted to know why I spoke like a retarded person (and I had to have someone translate that gem of a question for me).

Worst job: folding THOUSANDS of rectangular flats of all sizes into boxes for toothpaste tubes, those boxed toothpaste tubes (put into cases) and the cases of boxed toothpaste tubes (into larger boxes I had to make).

Right now I write. I also day trade. I also act/model.

Most interesting: acting in movies. Being a consultant is also very interesting... but movie making is fascinating!

Worst job: waiting tables at a Chinese restaurant. Yuck!

I'm pretty young, and I don't have a job. Actually I have never had a real job before - other than my writing. Once I worked at a local newspaper in its printing press, putting together pamphlets, but I only did it for two days and I only got the job because my grandparents knew the owner. Other than that, I have never had a job. I hope I'll never need one. I lack social skills, I am a total night owl and I'm qualified for nothing. I'm praying my novel series will take off so that I won't have to worry about money for atleast a few years so I can either get qualified for SOMETHING or continue as a full-time writer. Until I send out my first MS (still in progress), I'm moochin' off my family - which they don't seem to mind. :)

What was the question?

Oh yeah...

Current job: Freelance writer

Most fulfilling job: Being a Mom

Hardest job: Being a Mom

Worst job: Hmm. Tough to choose. Could be when I worked in a factory putting stickers on Snap, Crackle, Pop canteens. Doesn't that sound like fun? I lasted there one whole day.

Or several of the office jobs where I was a clerk-typist. BOR-ING.

Most interesting/most creative job: Writing

Goodness .......I sell stuff online for the past 5 years. I volunteer alot. (but that doesn't pay in cash.....just mental health).

I've had a million jobs .......from Las Vegas Casino Cocktail waitress (10 years doing that one job....hey I quit young). Inventory control clerk, cost accountant, phone interviewer, supermarket checker (hated that one), pet shop salesperson. Worked at a ski resort - worked at a horse race track. I'm sure I forgot several jobs.

I worked as an exec. secretary for 20 years 'til I had too many health probs. to work anymore, so I retired at 40. I love to write, but hate to remind editors about payment. It gives us a little extra income, ok, very little...

Hugs, Susie:)

For the past four years I've been a medical claims examiner for one of the larger third party administrators in the country. I've also been a legal secretary, medical records file clerk (2 different hospitals), an insurance underwriter, a medical transcriptionist...umm...data entry clerk through temp agencies...

Also, I'm a mommy and a wife...the two most fulfilling jobs I've ever had.

I used to be active duty in the Navy. Now I work for a defense contractor, designing and building navy ships (there's no escaping the clutches of Uncle Sam). I also volunteer for a ministry that was founded about a year ago not too far from where I live:

Plus I am a dad and hubby and am semi-active in the reserves.

Jobs

I am a massage therapist and I love it but my body needs me to freelance.

When I was in college I worked in a pulp and paper mill. Steel-toed boots , hard hat, safety glasses and a gas mask. We were the "fill in"
for people on vacation, so you had to do their job for a week.Driving forklifts, packaging bulk paper rolls-crazy things, and all hours-day, swing and graveyard. If you did not have a replacement job you were on the rock crew. We had to take huge limestone rocks out of a rail car and into a mining cart, wheel it to the tower take the cart to the top and dump it into the tower. After work I would sit in the ehower and cry. To add insult to injury I gained my freshman fifteen that summer living with my aunt and uncle who were gourmet chefs. But in return they taught me everything I know about wine, and I got to spend the summer on the pacific coast.
It actually turned out to be a pretty interesting summer.

I'm mostly a stay-at-home mom with 2 kids, but I do a few things besides writing to keep life interesting; I'm a figure skating instructor, as well as a designer of custom handbags. Parenting aside, my most fulfilling job was that of schoolteacher; most fun job was as owner-proprietor of a small antiques/gift shop business; worst job was working as a waitress during a college break.

My current full-time job is as a temporary Account Manager at a telecom company. I also work part-time as a fitness tech at a women's only exercise center.

My first job ever was pumping gas, nearly 30 years ago.

The worst job I've ever had was a 2 week temp assignment where I cut off excess laminate from menus at a print shop.

The best job I've ever had, because I refuse to talk about the worst of anything without balancing it with the best, was a production control supervisor at a factory.

By day, I babysit a million-dollar business communications system for a worldwide financial organization. On the weekends, Cathy leads the choir at church and I'm the lead male vocalist.

And I write. Once in a while.

Retired, killing stray flies, right now (not that I'm proud of killing them; I beg for their pardon, like natives when they hunt and kill and ask their forgiveness, the critters being critters of God, you know) and writing.

This job of writing takes so much energy and time, you wouldn't guess before you embark on it, but I really intend to make it full job and to succeed in it. No way back! I'm gonna show them all, okay? Okay!

Worst job - packer in a retail shop.

Best job - internal comptroller in the purchasing dpt of a big Univ in Israel. No one dared to ask me questions. It was me who did it, asking, I mean.

Hardest job - being a father to two sons. It competes w writing, ha-ha!

Right now I work volleyball camps. Because I play college volleyball, it's an awesome job...it's your required summer workout during lunch breaks and teaching kids something you love the rest of the time.

My worst job was waitressing. I was never trained--just thrown into the job--and I got in trouble for all sorts of things. You wouldn't think waitressing takes much training, but I apparently needed it. My boss disliked me, but my tables seemed to like me because I received good tips.

Other than that...I'm a student, which isn't really a job, but it's what takes up my time outside of writing and volleyball.
