Since our health-craze founder Good Word has been away for a while (in Peru, no less!) and despite being back, has spotty net access at the moment, I thought I would start the June thread a-rollin'.

Though I have slowed down a lot in my quest for skinnyness, I am still making progress. My goal for this month, as usual, is to lose the recommended 8 pounds. I'm currently at 215, so that means I hope to get down to 207 by the end of the month.

How about you?

Funny you should ask. Today is Day 3 of Induction (Atkins). It's my second time. The first time, I lost 27 pounds...and then I fell off plan and I gained 6 pounds (eek!) (over the course of 5 months. Coulda been worse I suppose).

The sugar cravings are killing me, but I know I'll get over them. I don't have a scale though. I used to use the digital scale at the school's health center, but it's closed over the summer.

I also quit smoking. Today is Day 2. Oddly, the nicotine cravings are not as intense as the sugar cravings.

I also quit drinking. I want a beer. A nice, citrusy, pale German beer...Or a Mexican beer. Maybe some Pacifico.

Chuck and all, Peru huh? Hope she had a good time.

I spent the memorial day holiday going, coming or in Denver. I did have a great time, but as expected gained some weight back. Didn't weigh Monday since I wasn't home yet, but Tuesday's weight was up. Haven't gotten back on track exercise-wise yet, but am back on the no sugar, no flour plan.

Eight pounds the recommended huh? Guess that's my goal for this month then. Would prefer 10, but will settle for 8.

Pepper - you got rid of 27 gained 6 (over several months) for a total reduction of 21 pounds? Not bad at all. Good luck with the new beginning and congrats on giving up smoking.

Good for you, Pepper! I quit smoking at 21, nearly 30 years ago. Also, I think I neglected to mention that this past May 7 marked 18 years clean and sober. I still salivate when I think of a nice cold brewski on a hot day, but I can't stand the smell of cigarettes or any tobacco product. Makes me gag.

I started lifting weights a couple of weeks ago. I'm not trying to lose or gain weight, I just want to look a little cut, ya know. I'm beginning to think it won't happen unless I give up fat or eating altogether. Pffftttt, like that will ever happen. With allergy season now underway all my exercise has to be done indoors. It sucks.

My various interruptions and ailments are all held at bay for the time being, so I'm back to walking, with a goal of 60 miles in June. I've done 10 already. These warm days, I have to get out early or it's brutal... I've got a new route with lots more shade than the old one!

thank you

I am officially joining the June get healthy group, kudos to all.
We just got back from the lake and is it my imagination or is everybody in the world thinner and tanner this year? Yikes-I got a wake up call. I started pilates this morning and will start running again Monday. Possibly no more carbs, but I am really struggling with the spring blah blues that make me feel like I could live on white rice, bagels and tillamook chocolate peanut butter ice cream. Ok,ok, the pool opens in 5 days and that means I will have to break out the summer clothes. If I cut the carbs today maybe by next week last years stuff will fit. It is a lot easier to live on chicken breasts and diet coke when you know your shorts don't button. Thanks for starting this.
Sam
P.S. I am a nutrition expert in real life but in my writer life, I like to pretend that living on chicken breasts and diet coke is a perfectly balanced diet. I just need to round it out by including red wine and bittersweet chocolate.

Pepper,

Drink the calorie free, carb free, et al. water that tastes like fruit--that will curb sugar cravings in an instant.

As for me . . . I got down to a size eight this year (never been that small, close but never), so I want to tone up. Eight is good, but flabby eight not so good. That is being done via gardening (I'm housesitting so it's part of the gig) and walking.

cravings

Crystal light now makes packets to carry with you to put in water bottles etc. Water, Water, Water, Water. If your body is hydrated all the other things will be easier for your body to handle and we all know that it takes so much time and energy to drink all that water you(hopefully) don't have time to worry about other stuff!
Also licorice is great for oral fixation withdrawal. A little high in sugar but if all you do is bite off the end and suck on it for awhile it can really help.

Congrats! to all who have progressed and who have recently joined the Health thread.

Sorry to say, after all the encouragement from the wonderful people here, after 65 days of being smoke free, I lit up yesterday. One day, I may try to quit again.

Good luck to all of you!

How 'bout today, Joanne?

As fer me and the weigh-in:

7.gif

213 lbs

Slow and steady! This brings me within 3 pounds of the half-way point in my quest to be 170lbs. Will it happen this month? Why the heck not?

Ok. Maybe problem solved. That one posted. My report: Back on track after May mayham (lots of mays used, huh?). 3pounds down, 5 to go for June.

Chuck congrats.

Joanne, I'm with Chuck. Today can be the day you begin again. Yesterday was just a fluke. Come on, we'll help.

sgtsdaughter- size 8 huh? Good for you. Me I'll be happy to reach size 12. I think it's possible.

samgail, welcome to the group. Chicken breasts and diet coke sounds good to me. Especially if you top it off with chocolate. What could be better?

Walkin' Maryn, so how many miles have you amassed so far?

I started back on my routine today.

Just a little FYI to all those using numbers as goals-muscle weighs more than fat so if you are following the reduce the caloric intake, increase the physical activity formula don't go by just the numbers. Great job everyone!

Thanks for asking.

I'm so discouraged--some bad health news that may be weight-related because it disappeared when I lost 25 pounds fast is back even though I only regained 4. Doc says it still could, since 25 more would be nice, but it might not help at bit.

This ought to be a great motivator, but it's just depressing to realize that the deprivation and fear that helped me lose that much was for nothing. (I'm seeing a specialist in the fall--but I got dibs on David Crosby's liver!)

Anyway, enough bellyaching. So far in June, I've walked 20 1/2 miles, already more than a third of the way toward my monthly goal of 60. (Going past the goal is just gravy--fat-free, chemical-tasting gravy with a consistency that's both chalky and gel-like..)

Maryn, uncommonly whiny--sorry!

Good-o getting back on the routine, samgail. Yeah, I think they're cheerleaders ... or else there's an airliner in here that thinks it's taxiing up to the gate.

I was thinking either cheerleaders or--what's the word, semafores? Something like that. The guys with the flags to direct boats? (Can you tell I grew up in the desert by my spelling?)

Either way, it's nice and cheery. Thanks!

I am obviously unversed in the art of smilie people
Somewhere there is a teenage smilie girl crying in her room-
"but Mom they were comparing me to jumbo jets and oceanliners"

All it takes is for the right teenage smilie boy--you know, the quiet smart one who always needs a haircut?--to ask her for the homework assignment (which she knows he already has) for those tears to dry right up.

Well, two weeks have officially passed since I started my diet and quit smoking. I weighed myself this morning and it appears I'm down 4 pounds.

Two pounds a week, not bad.

Good stuff, pepper!

I, on the other hand, am stuck again. Although when I look at the graph I set up to monitor my progress, I appear to have merely slowed down, not stopped altogether.

I am ashamed to admit that I have nothing to say. No progress or anything.

However....

I am in the process of reorganizing/rearranging my room so that I will have floor space to actually exercise. I have the DVDs & stuff, just not the room. But I will.
