Have you checked out Imagi's other film idea T28? Other than the Kaneda not looking right I think the style is pretty good. There are surveys on their site http://www.imagi.com.hk/web/

cool giant robots, cool super villain...but that kid is definitely in the Uncanny Valley.

At least Freddie Highmore is a good actor. Better than finding some flavor-of-the-month hottie that looks the part but can't express any emotion.

Finally took the time to watch this last night on Netflix instant. It was better than I thought it would be. I did notice that Nicolas Cage as a voice actor seemed to have only one emotion -- bothered.
