Does anyone here collect unemployment or know how it works?

I've been collecting unemployment for two weeks while I look for another job. I've been looking like crazy.

Someone suggested I try doing some side work as a babysitter or dog walker to pull in some extra cash. I have looked into it and the jobs available in my area will net me $50 or less per week, which is less than what I get for unemployment right now. My question is, if I take these little side jobs, will I be ineligible for unemployment? Obviously I'd rather be working than collecting unemployment, but it doesn't make sense to lose unemployment pay for a job that pays much less.

I tried calling my local unemployment office to ask this, but I keep getting that "All operators are busy, call back when hell freezes over" message.

You have to report any additional income. My part-time teaching job at the County College didn't affect the amount I received from unemployment because it was so little. It's better to report what you get and be honest lest it come back to haunt you.
Good luck!

Thanks! I was definitely going to report it, especially since some of the people will probably pay by check. I just don't want to lose money I desperately need for work that pays less.

You're allowed to earn up to a certain amount before UI worries about it. Above that amount, they subtract the difference from your next UI check. It doesn't go away, however. It's still in your UI fund. It just gets put on the back. So you might get a smaller benefits check, but the money lasts longer.

Here I am with my shiny college degree and brand spankin new debt, and already forced to collect unemployment. And to think there was once a time I was in a hurry to be an adult.

It's been years for me since I had to sign up for that but don't you just go to a service center with your record of employment which you get from your ex employer and then apply for it? This is how it works in Canada.
Yup you just have to inform them of what you make.

Is anyone working anymore?

Engineers, entrepreneurs, soldiers, sailors, air force, doctors, nurses, teachers, college professors, judges (especially bankruptcy judges), lawyers (especially bankruptcy and property lawyers), court reporters, police, firemen, locksmiths, gun store owners, mechanics (people are keeping cars and repairing them rather than purchasing new ones), tire shop owners and car part owners (see above), farmers, ranchers, miners (especially gold and other metals), oil field workers and geologists, weapons manufacturers of all sorts from bullets to tanks, repair people of any skill in any and all categories, remodeling companies, medical information service people (filling out forms which will quadruple soon, booming industry), grocery store owners and employees, property management companies and apartment locating companies, bar owners (where there's no smoking bans), liquor and beer makers, liquor store owners, Scientific American (the people who make the set-top boxes no one needs that the US government paid billions for up front), drug manufacturers and salesmen, geriatric care specialists, diesel engine mechanics and manufacturers.

Now that's the short list. When the economy changes, some sectors which haven't done well will suddenly do better than other sectors. That's the nature of capitalism.

The problem is that people have trained and educated themselves for sectors which will fail, or have immersed themselves in businesses which are solely dependent on a 'boom' mentality, like Starbucks. No one needs to spend $5 for a cup of coffee. That was a stupid business plan, but it, amazingly, worked because people wanted to show their conspicuous consumption. I was just at a recently foreclosed home today, and there were Starbucks coffee cups there. These people were losing their home, but still paid more for a cup of coffee than what they could pay if they made it themselves for two months or more.

Who won't be working:

Construction workers, anyone associated with auto sales, specialty retailers like 'Fanco' (people will go to Lowe's instead and get the same fan for 75% less, conspicuous consumption is dead for another 60 years), coffee shops which don't sell donuts, technology people of every stripe (no one wants the 'next best' anymore), salesmen (this will be the hardest hit sector by far, just like during the great depression), welders, pipe fitters, concrete trades, any construction businesses like roofing tile manufactures, etc., durable goods manufacturers (everyone will repair than replace a dryer, fridge, etc.), FedEx and similar delivery services, the USPS, restaurants and waiters, casinos, writers, artists, sculptors, pest control, dentists and hygienists, tourist workers, ski resort workers, lifeguards, hair stylists, nail painters, make-up sales people, clothing sales, fashion designers, interior designers, art galleries, antique galleries, kid's birthday party locations, jewelers, furriers, limo drivers, taxi drivers, shoe salesmen, etc., etc.

Who is 'working' is politicians, making everything worse than it should be.

No, where I live I just had to call them and answer a few questions, and every Sunday I call back and go through the automated thingy to renew my claim. I've never had to go down there in person. But it's murder trying to call the number and talk to an actual human being for the sake of asking a question.

I'm not, and I haven't been since I was laid off at the end of September. Pretty soon, I will go into extended unemployment benefits. Thank GOD for that. I have resumes out everywhere and job applications filled out everywhere.

When it first happened, I figured--eh well. It'll give me a little time to focus on school until I find more work. Now, I am really starting to worry. If not for unemployment checks and hubby's job, we would be completely sunk. As it stands, we are hanging on by a slender thread. I am maxxed out on the benefits scale, and it's still only a fraction of what I earned at my last job. It's hard to take a 3/4 "pay" cut!

That's what I do too, but I think it varies depending on where you live. When my brother was on unemployment years ago, he had to go to the office and show them copies of every job application AND the signatures of managers where he had applied. At one time, he had over 1,000 resumes out!

And yes--God save us from ever having to call and talk to a person. I had to do that a week ago, and it took absolutely ALL DAY to get through.

Check out this article:

This guy's whole website is just jam packed full of useful information.

Not sure if it'll help your situation specifically, but you might find a few things in there to keep you motivated.

it depends on where you live. I rec'd unemployment for a few months and if I took a one day temp job that paid $6 an hour I lost my benefit for the week. But if I didn't take the one day temp job the temp agency wouldn't call me out for the next job, which could be two weeks or permanent. I was stuck between a rock and a hard place. I chose the one day job which sucked but I didn't want to be on unemployment forever. It felt like I was being punished for working. I actually wrote on my sheet (I had to fill one out weekly) GOD FORBID I ACTUALLY MAKE RENT! one week. that was in CA - gosh about 10 years ago! or is it 12? Sheesh where does the time go?

my job isn't in danger because no one else wants it. still, my school district is talking about going to 4 days instead of 5. less pay for more work because that fifth day will be for grading papers and lesson plans--s6

At least here, you have to watch out because if you apply for a job, they offer crap wages and you turn it down, I've been told they can yank your benefits (for the week? I'm not sure)

It's been several years since I've had to dip into unemployment...but here, you couldn't request a check until after your severance (if you had any) ran out...then you had to apply for so many jobs in the first week before you could request a check and receive it after the second week (of applying for jobs).

Our system was automated too, if memory serves.

Thanks, everyone, for weighing in!

I managed to get ahold of the unemployment office, and they told me that if I'm collecting less than the unemployment check, they will take a portion out of my check but I'll still collect.
