View Full Version : How to reply to a rep comment on AW...?

Man do I feel dumb, but I guess I'll finally ask this, though I've been on here for (ahem) a couple of years.

When I go to User CP, and I see a comment - how do I reply to that specific comment? I click on the name and get the person's general profile; that's not it. I click on the thread link and just go back to the thread, so...noope.
I've been "sending a personal message" but that doesn't seem right either.
And what does a comment have to do with "reputation"?

I feel like I'm ignoring people's comments & don't want to.
Help for slightly dense me?? Sigh.

As you can't reply to rep comments from User CP, what you'd have to do if you wanted to send them a return comment is find another of the person's posts and send the rep comment from there.

If they haven't made another easy-to-find post in the same thread with the same subject, then you can always click on their username, list their latest posts ("Find all posts by..."), select one of these, and send them a rep comment from this post.

Rep points don't buy you anything, but are taken by many to be a measure of goodwill received.

Yep, Derek pretty much hit the nail on the head. You can't directly reply to a rep point, but you can reply to the user through an unrelated post.

Thanks, you guys. I've been kind of doing it that way, but wondered if I'd missed something!

Have a great weekend :partyguy:

We also have the rep response repository (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74812)in Office Party. You can reply there. :) Just post your response.

Hi

I'm not exactly a newby, but the workings if aw are still a mystery to me:) After several months, I discovered that people were sometimes giving me reputation points and leaving comments. My question is, is it possible to respond to these comments without clicking on the sender's name and sending them a message? Is there a quicker way? People sometimes say funny or kind things, and I'd like to respond briefly, but don't see a way to. Or is it expected that you won't respond?

I suppose that was more than one question! Thanks!

No, you can't reply directly to a rep comment. Your only two options are to either find one of the person's posts and send them a rep point and comment, or to send them a private message.

Hold on......... is it expected for us to reply to rep points? Crap..... I'm kinda new at this.

I greatly appreciate any little rep points that come my way, but I didn't realise it was expected that we respond. I figured I would just keep an eye out for the posts by that member and rep them when they write something awesome. :D

That's pretty much what I do, Cray, but sometimes I might want to flash back a scintillatingly witty retort!

Thanks everyone. Now I know that others don't reply to rep comments, I'll stop wondering if I'm being a bit rude. Thanks for your answers:)

Responding to a rep comment with a rep point defeats the purpose of rep points. If you want to respond to a comment that is extraordinary, do it in a pm. Puma

This thread is great as I had NO clue what rep points/comments/replies were all about... I'm still a bit confused but it's early... Thank you!!!

I'm a freak with you, auntybug. But in my upbringing it was called "manners." Not replying, to me, is kinda like ignoring someone who's spoken to you. Mama taught me differently, and she made my sibs and I always write those thank-you notes for gifts, too.

No judgemental-ness meant. Just saying that I do try to reply to reps. I sometimes see them late, but they are still very cool.

I only found out yesterday that I had some rep points. Oops! And I have been here quite a while.

How do you give other people rep points?

If you look down at the bottom left corner of any post, you'll see little icons like these:

http://bitbucket.webs.com/aw-icons.jpg

Click on the white scales to give someone a rep point. Smileys can be included by typing text characters into the comment field, e.g.

That's so nice of you to say. Happy to do that.

My feeling is that if someone is kind enough to take the time to rep me, I want to rep them back, so to me it lets the other person know they and their rp are appreciated.

You can now reply directly to rep points, as of the last update. Clicking on the givers' name allows you to leave a message in their visitor box.

Adding to which, visitor messages seem to be public, readable by anyone looking at your profile, whereas rep point comments are private.
