As long as you're there...

I need the name of a beer commonly drunk in NY.

New York the city, or New York the state?

Maryn, who's had beer in both

I found these five on a list from Merchant's Fine Wine in MI, which is like a Costco of awesome beer and wine - their PDF listing all of the beers they carry is 12 pages long!
You can probably Google them for more info to see if they would fit in your story, but the breweries are all based in the state of NY: Pete's Brewing; Southern Tier Brewing; Shmaltz brewing (Kosher beer!); Ommegang brewing; J. W. Dundee

My son lives near Albany, so I've spent time in the area. Beers you'll find in the area include:

Brown's Pale Ale, Porter, or Stout

Genesee beer, Cream Ale, or Light, commonly referred to as "Jenny, Jenny Creme, or Jenny Light"

Cooper's Cave Ale (just north of Albany)

Ithaca Beer

Rohrbach

Saranac

Saratoga White Ale

Maryn, recommending this site, which included invitees to a brewery contest in the Hudson Valley area

You'll find just as many drinking Budweiser and Labatts. They're not local beers, but they sell a lot of the stuff.

Oh, sure, we drink those too. I've got Miller in the house pretty much all the time. It is, after all, the champagne of bottled beers.

I'm from the Albany area, although I live abroad now and only go back in the summer. Saranac is popular, but a little pricy. A cheaper beer I saw some of the younger (college age) folks drinking was Pabst Blue Ribbon - which they call PBR.
