necrophilia and bestiality would be hard to sell in adult as well, except to a very specific niche market publisher, I'd think.

So....yeah, those probably can't be in most YA.

BUT!

if you've got a REALLY good reason for it and it's not just for shock value, then yes it can be in there. most agents would probably reject immediately, but if it's a good, well-written story and the necrophilia, bestiality, whatever isn't just there to be there, then it can eventually find a home.

Shady Lane
02-24-2009, 03:36 AM
Zoombie's characters aren't allowed to have sex. Actually.

I read this one book (it was awful, but not for this reason) where the main character was all traumatized 'cause he was sleeping with this girl who died either just after or during or just before they were having sex, he didn't know.

Oh quite - I wasn't suggesting (ahem) speciality porn... Shady, in her post immediately below yours, described the sort of incident that I had in mind. In fact that one has been used in a film, made as long ago as 1965, called The Party's Over. (It had a lot of censorship problems as you might expect and is pretty obscure nowadays.)

As for bestiality, well you could reflect the fact that it's a well-known pastime in very deprived rural areas, or has been in the past.

But as you say, either subject in a YA novel, however justified by the storyline, would be a difficult one to get past agents, let alone teachers and librarians.

So there probably are limits, in the more out-there forms of sexuality. But not as many as a lot of people seem to think. Which is the whole purpose of this thread.

I'll stop lowering the tone now. :)

See, I wouldn't really consider having sex with a girl who died in the middle or before necrophilia because he didn't know she was going to die.

I realize this would cause a lot of "omg I liked it I'm some kind of monster" reflection, but I'm not sure if I would call it necrophilia...

Shady Lane
02-24-2009, 03:56 AM

poo is a great word. and it was more in tone with the "butterflies in her stomach" moment than the crap-a-pants cliche. it was totally an expression the character would say, it just got poo-pooed by the editor in all her wise wisdom. haha.

Reading this thread, I feel so very tame as a writer. I have no animal-lovin', no dead-people-lovin', no instances of the word 'poo' at all, no specific mention of the 'backdoor boogie' (by the way, I'd never heard it called that. You learn something new every day.)
*hangs head in shame* My MC even goes to a church and takes the wise advice of a priest at one point! It helps her through her emotional turmoil!
I suppose I'm no tamer (read: sickeningly prudish) than is to be expected. I haven't had a chance to grow into my real potential, yet. You folks are probably helping that go a lot faster. I commend you!

and one of my characters has impure thoughts about another boy. AM I GOING TO HELL???

grace, all good books need antagonists
But what if these are protagonists? Does that mean the author is going to Hell?

Shouldn't the title be Yes Virginia, your characters can have sex.
Yes, that would be a most titillating title.

Wonder how young readers would find it? Wouldn't it be like a banned book though?
I wonder how young drug users find illegal drugs....

Those are the easiest books to find.

They make LISTS of banned books. My friends and I used to use those books as reading lists. While the non-banned books fester in quiet anonymity on the school library shelf, the banned books go home from Barnes & Noble with the cool kids. :D
Every year public libraries across the US (maybe the world) put on displays of banned books for Banned Books Week (http://www.bannedbooksweek.org/) (there's a link that says "What you can do." No doubt many will click that thinking they can submit titles to be banned. No fair submitting your own book).

Here's a more explanatory page

My characters have as much sex as I have had in my whole life. None.

Seriously, the one time I describe a sex scene my character prefer watch TV while doing it and calling it "an obligation"

Is there's something wrong with me?
Did you steal that from Winston and his wife in "1984?"

I first read "1984" in high school, that must be why my ideas about sex are so warped...

really? then ogata is dead in the water.

I el em ay oh'd at your simile. It works on so many levels.

The phrase "need a poo" appears on the opening page of Patrick Ness's The Knife of Never Letting Go, and it's spoken by a talking dog. That novel won the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize last year and it's up for the Carnegie Medal at the moment.

Sex is the magic word. Just as the cake is a lie.

Well I can tell you from experience in most situations it is indeed a lie.

EDIT: Unless of course it's Tiramisu then in that case if it lies, I'll be pissed. I love tiramisu.
