That's a good question right now.
  1. Place your cursor in the spot where you want the footnote number to appear in the text.
  2. Select Insert from the Toolbar.
  3. Select Reference from the Insert menu
  4. Select Footnote from the list of Reference options.
  5. Use the Footnote/Endnote popup to select your options.
  6. Click Insert or Apply as appropriate.

ETA: Assumes you're not using the docx version of Microsoft Word.

With your cursor where you want the little citation number to appear, go to Insert--> Footnote (for the bottom of the page) or Endnote (at the end of the whole doc). This will put a little number in your essay text, then send your cursor to the note to fill in that information. Then you can go back to where you were and continue the essay.

Is this what you're trying to do?

Ah-- cross posted with Birol!

Yes it is. Thanks for the info both you and Birol. I really appreciate it. Although I take notes with my PC now I don't know the ins and outs of how to do a lot of things on it.

In word 2007, the Footnot/Endnotes are entered through the 'References' tab. If you need more help, just click the blue ? and type "Footnote" scroll down to where it explains the step-by-step procedure.

oh yeah I knew how to do headers and footers it was just the little numbers within the text. My rough draft is due March 10. I'm writing about The Aluetian Front during WWII.
I'll definitely keep a look out for the blue question mark and check that out first though. Thanks.
