Welcome!

THE FOLLOWING THREAD WAS WRITTEN SOME TIME AGO, SO I'M NOT SURE ALL THE INFO (LINKS, ETC.) ARE UP TO DATE.

If you’re new to greeting card writing, this forum is a good place to start.

Look through the previous pages and posts here and you'll find all kinds of helpful and interesting info. Take advantage of the search feature on this site (it's located towards the top of the screen).

Where do I begin?

I highly recommend reading Sandra Louden's tipsheet at
http://www.greetingcardwriting.com/Tipsheet.htm

How do I find markets?

Suggestions by batyler65 (aka Barb):

You can also write directly to the companies and request writer's guidelines. Enclose a SASE with your request.

Some of the giant companies (Hallmark) use no freelance work. And others (frex: American Greetings) use very little.

Assuming you are US based, the Greeting Card Association has an online presence: http://www.greetingcard.org/gca_publishermembers.html

Some companies have websites. Others just list addresses. A caution: The e-mail addresses listed in this site tend to be for sales, not writers. When in doubt, send a postal request for writers' guidelines. In a lot of cases, I've found that I can google a company name and find a website even when one isn't listed on the GCA page.

If you want to save yourself loads of legwork, our wonderful board host Jenna Glatzer (Hi, Jenna!) has compiled a wonderful e-book packed with market information and contacts. You can get a copy here: http://www.absolutewrite.com/ebookstore/funstuff.htm

Jenna's updated version 4/27/05:

www.jennaglatzer.com/EbookFunstuff2.pdf (http://www.jennaglatzer.com/EbookFunstuff2.pdf)

(No, I don't get kickbacks for peddling the book. I have been freelancing in the greeting card industry for eleven years and I consider it to be the best market book for this.)

Suggestion by Torin:

You can also go to Writer's Market (http://www.writersmarket.com/) and subscribe for one month to check the markets. They list greeting card companies with contact information for everything from Blue Mountain to Ephemera.

The links to Jenna's e-book don't work - any news in that direction?

Hi Andreya,

Hmmm...I'm not sure why that link isn't functioning. Let me get back to you on that.

Debbie :)

Andreya,

The link is no longer available - the book is apparently out of date. My guess would be that a number of companies went out of business, changed their guidelines, changed contact info, things of that nature.
Sorry - if you need further direction or assistance, just pm me.

Debbie :)
