I've read 35.

I've read the first six.

ETA: Twenty or so, but here's a question, How is a series a single book? The Harry Potter series is seven books. Anyway, I just read The Bell Jar, and I've read it five or six times. I've read some of these books more than once, so of the list I'm up to sixty or more.

At a quick glance I know I've read about 90% of these titles. I didn't read the bible from cover to cover, but I have read most of it. I didn't read Emma or Persuasion. I didn't read Notes from a Small Island. I think I've read most of the rest...

I'll have to mark it some other time. (-;

If I read the ones from the list I currently have on Mount TBR as well, that would bring my total up to about 75.

It's a very UK oriented list which makes sense considering the BBC put it together. Some Noble Prize winning US authors were excluded, such as: Faulkner, Hemingway, Tony Morrison, Saul Bellows, along with well-known non-winners Mark Twain and John Updike.

Still it's a good list with a nice combination of high-lit and popular fiction. At a rough guess-timate, I've read about 2/3 of them.

And Dan Brown and Mitch Albom are on this list?

42 out of 100 - not too shabby. :)

ETA - had to read a lot of Steinbeck in school. I hated, hated, HATED his stuff. Still do. Would it have killed him to actually have something good happen to one of his characters just once?

I've only read 14 of these.

Looks like I've got a new TBR list. :( Still, I've read quite a few that aren't on the list that I think should be, given that Da Vinci Code (which, yes, I've read, along with Angels & Demons)made the list, like The Road, No Country For Old Men, I Am Legend, The Book Thief, The Red Badge of Courage, etc., etc.

Some I've always wanted to read, but never have. A couple, I think I've read, but it's been so long ago that I can't be sure. Catch-22 is one of those.

Oh, and I've seen a stage adaptation of To Kill A Mockingbird, which I thought was pretty excellent. *shrug*

I've read 31 of those, not including partial reads or only a couple books out of a series. It kind of baffles me you get double points for Lion, Witch & Wardrobe, but it is what it is. I got hit hard by all the Bronte/Austen stuff.

In my defense, I've only been reading seriously for two and a half years. Also, I've got a number of these books already, I just haven't gotten around to reading them. Furthermore, it is my belief that there is too much Jane Austen on this list (BBC, I know, but still)

I've read 38 of these all the way to the end and pieces of five others. I thought everyone had read most of these?

Louisa May Alcott deserved more than one entry :p And Frankenstein should have been on here since dracula was. I actually finished Dracula, but not Frankenstein, LOL! Oh, and The Name of the Rose, too.

15, and I'm only guessing I might have read Winnie the Pooh as a child.

With the arguable exception of The Bible, why is this list all fiction?

counting them was harder than reading them. Of course that wouldn't be true if You'd put Hunch Back by Huge on here. I managed 60 pages of that, it should count for something.

Only 26 - but to be fair a fair few are just not what I like to read. Not a huge Austen fan ( I've read one). I read some Dickens at school but it's just not my thing really. The Bible...Unlikely. I don't read stuff just so I can say I've read it.

If they'd put more dragons or lasers in there I expect I'd have read more :D

I've read twenty-five for sure, but there were a few I honestly couldn't remember if I'd read or not.

I read 1984 in high school. Loved it.

Of that list, I've read maybe 30 of them, others I started but didn't finish.

And sex. If they had dragons, lasers, and sex, then I would have read them all.

I've only read about 17- maybe 20 that I've read all the way through. there's probably at least 20 on that list I have started but not finished, and if it's been a movie, I probably haven't read the book. I find it difficult to read through most stories after seeing the movie. I did try Tolkien and found him much easier on film, same with Austen, Dickens and Bronte.

I LOVE the Peter Jackson films. The books (The Fellowship of the Ring and part of The Two Towers, that's as far as I got) bored me to tears, I'm sorry to say.

I remember reading the opening chapter of The Hobbit, but I never got further than that for some reason.

Meh. I could do better. I don't like Victorian literature much, so haven't read those ones, except for Dickens.

It's a bit of a curious and mixed list. Some of those I've loved and some I haven't heard of.

yep. think I started that book more than once. still own it and all the LOTR as well, just in case I get the inkling again, in fact, I own many of the books on that list, but haven't read them.

BTW, I read Madame Bovary in h.s. as an assignment, and loved it. must return to that one...

A few other comments about this list.

Although I didn't read some of the novels listed by certain authors (The Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck), I DID read East of Eden.

And I don't think I saw certain other classics listed there such as The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner. That one I read.

And how about Hemingway? I read most of his novels in college. The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms.

And though I didn't read Ulysses by Joyce, I read Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Loved that one.

Now let's see, that's either all or 65 you haven't heard of, right?

IMHO, some of them are okay reads, though none is of the caliber of, Mickey Spillane's, I The Jury. But then, what other book could be?

I've read all but 16 of them - and I have one on my to-be-read pile right now.

But I went to school a long time ago in a place where 50 of them were required reading and I have had time to read the rest of them - along with dozens and dozens of genre works - since.

I am delighted to see a couple I have not heard of before - will get them on the list asap.

I think it would be interesting to see a list of top 100 authors instead of books, it would eliminate the multiple entries, the missing entries, and probably give a better indicator of how well-read someone is.

56.

A few of my favorites are on the list. I have a list of 1001 books you "should" read in your lifetime. And I only have around 200 of them read. The list has a gigantic chunk of contemporary fiction on it and I just don't read much contemporary stuff (aside from nonfiction, these days.)

I've read 25, but isn't The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe part of the Chronicles of Narnia?

I've read 38. But I wonder how they came up with that list?

When I've checked a list of top 100 everyone should read or something like that, I've always only read a handful of the "classics". Some of the classics are beasts to get through.

Tally – 20 read. Some of these were difficult, though. For instance, I've read almost all of Shakespeare's sonnets plus numerous plays (Hamlet, Othello, Macbeth, etc) but not all of them. I've read a good chunk of the bible, but not the complete thing yet. I've finished the first four Harry Potter books but not the latest ones. So those ones are kind of cheating, I think. Anyway, one thing looking at this list does? It makes me want to go down to the library, collect a huge stack of books, and lock myself in my room with a pot of coffee for the next year (seriously, how can I not have gotten around to Lolita or One Hundred Years of Solitude, or even Dracula yet? And I've been telling myself for a few years now I was going to start on Les Miserables).
