I've noticed that many of us nonAussie AWers have changed our avvies to show support for our Aussie friends during this terrible time.

I was thinking we could have an Aussie avvie weekend this Valentine's weekend to show our love for our Aussie friends, those we know and those we don't.

I am in. I am also open to suggestions as to the best fund or trust to donate to for the rebuilding.

I've contacted a bunch of Aussies, here, and folks I used to work with, and hands down everyone says the Australian Red Cross; they're spending the money on aid, and they're not turning people away for religious/political or other reasons.

https://www.redcross.org.au/Donations/onlineDonations.asp

There's a menu that you can use to select Victorian Bushfire Appeal.

On the right is an address for check donations:

Send a cheque or money order to:
Australian Red Cross
GPO Box 2957
Melbourne VIC 8060
AUSTRALIA

You'll need to indicate that the donation is for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal.

I'm going to look for alternate ways too: my Amazon contact tells me they'll put up a page to let people donate via Amazon, who will then pass the funds on to the Australian Red Cross.

ETA: I called the American Red Cross, who told me that any funds donated to the disaster relief fund go into a general pool. It's a worthwhile general pool, but both the American Red Cross and the Aussie RC have specifically told me that the only way to have RC donations earmarked for Victoria is to go through Aussie RC.

I suppose this will be the end of the lemmings, for now.

I have absolutely no control over my avatar, so I'd hope it gets changed to something nicely Australian, like a big Foster's can or a cool flag, not a Bird Eating spider.

Hey one thing to remeber guys with check donations out of the country is that our banks will charge the $15 - 25$AU dollars to process them.

I have just updated my sig with the best way to to donate for anyone who wishes to. The are not deducting any fees from the donations nor will the payments be held up or diverted because of red tape and such.

I wasn't refering to a processing fee on payments in general but of overseas checks going to Australia and administration fees that are charged for moneys collected overseas for other country disaster funds, - the only way that any type of payment can be guaranteed to be recieved by the fund it is intended, and in full is by the Australian Red Cross.

Beach Bunny did you notice Medievalist previous post?

I have said in the Australia Underwater and on Fire thread where most Australians have been posting (there doesn't seem to be many of us here today), and on a few other places that when I first started seeing these avis go up around the place it brought a massive smile to my face. I kept calling my husband and daughter to look.

You guys a truely wonderful for making, I am sure all of us few Australians, when they realise what has been happening to smile in a time that has been difficult for us - we are a young nation, and fortunately, such tragedy has never been thrown on us perviously in peace time where we have lost so many of our own.

We have always felt such great empathy and pain (especially on 9/11) for great tragedies that happen overseas. I just saw a news article where a town in the US has been hit and a tornado has killed at least 15 people. I think I can speak for all of us, that we fully understand the rest of the world has such numerous heatache happening at the moment, and may we all, in such times, stay united.

Love the spider avatar! Spiders eat other, peskier bugs, so they're just fine with me.

I don't think it's huntsmans that eat spiders - we get huntsmans around our house; they're pretty common, and they're big and hairy, but otherwise harmless.

Could be a different variety of huntsman. I left my sandals outside the back door - should find out for sure before I put them back on, just in case....

These avatar changes are great. We appreciate your support. Just found out friends of my Aunt lost everything down there. They made it out - just. They were trapped on an oval with some others and surrounded by fire. Just a couple of the few lucky ones. Whole towns were wiped of the map. All that's left is the postcode and tough memories for the survivors. Thank you all for your support.

I was going to change my avatar to a picture of the Australia II yacht. But, I know some of you may have your own bitter memories of our magnificent victory.

Down Under

http://www.lyricsdomain.com/13/men_at_work/down_under.html

Traveling in a fried-out combie
On a hippie trail, head full of zombie
I met a strange lady, she made me nervous
She took me in and gave me breakfast
And she said,

"Do you come from a land down under?
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."

Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six foot four and full of muscles
I said, "Do you speak-a my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich
And he said,

"I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."

Lying in a den in Bombay
With a slack jaw, and not much to say
I said to the man, "Are you trying to tempt me
Because I come from the land of plenty?"
And he said,

"Oh! Do you come from a land down under? (oh yeah yeah)
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."

I've grabbed my bass, and daughter's on her guitar, playing along to these songs. One that's appropriate for now, which happens to be our current favourite: Touch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFX0pgXdd7g), by Noiseworks.

Gee, guys, I have dial up and youtube is painful most times. I just looked up the words Jo and yes, they are very appropriate :)

I've saved a copy of Beacj Bunny's avatar so I can still look at it after she changes it.

Down Under

http://www.lyricsdomain.com/13/men_at_work/down_under.html

Love that group and that song.

Ha. I didn't know the first line in it. I've been saying the wrong words... something like, "traveling in the vinyl cafe," or something... which makes no sense... thanks!

What's a combie? I assume it is a vehicle of sorts.

"Sounds of Then (This is Australia)" - Gangajang.

I'm surprised no-one's mentioned Cold Chisel, yet. Or Paul Kelly and the coloured girls (or the messengers, as our US friends may know them. They had to change their name for obvious reasons!) And what about a good ole rousing chorus of "You're the Voice", bagpipes and all?

Ah, it's good to be an Aussie, aint it! :D

We've donated about $64 million to the Red Cross, so far. I don't think that counts the corporate donations, either. One large supermarket chain will be donating all profits from across the country today. Tomorrow a very large hardware store chain, well-known for letting the local not-for-profit groups hold fund-raising sausage sizzles outside their stores each weekend, will be holding their own sausage sizzle and donating that to the cause.

Our village will be having its own sausage sizzle on Sunday and donating what we collect from that. From generosity comes hope. I don't think I'm ever going to forget that lesson learned.

It's all good stuff chevbrock, and I think we have all learnt a little more from this :)

I want to change my av, i really do, but that pic of nevada is the only copy i have, the original got lost when my hard drive fried. so while she's not dead, i can't take more pics because when you point a camera at her she hides. she's a strange dog. OH but she's part Australian Cattle Dog. Haha! my problem solved.

I'm not saying you should change your avatar, just helping. Can you right click on it then click save picture as? THen you'll have it again and can change your avi when you feel like it. Not that you should Nevada is aprecious dog to look at. :)

So many good avvies. I like Yeshanu's, WayneK's and I saw a map of Australia on Wikipedia I liked. But it was in some weird image format that didn't seem familiar. So I went with a great Aussie winery.
