I glance at my newspaper's obits daily. There's a section, In Memorial, in which people note anniversaries, birthdays, etc. of their loved ones who have died. It's a decent source of material occasionally. The rest, I scan for character names, with the occasional jolt of a familiar name.

Today there was something new, a fan noting this anniversary, wondering in print what music the legend gone too soon might be creating today, had he lived long enough. It certainly gave me pause, even though the guy was before my time.

I'm old enough I remember this. I wasn't so much into Buddy Holly, but I was into the Big Bopper. And I can still sing along with Don McLean without stumbling over the words.

*A moment of silence*

(Yes, technically all before my time - but I still know good music when I hear it. :) )

Of all the deaths that robbed music history of "What could Have Been" Buddy Holly, I think probably was the biggest loss, because he was just coming into his own, and still his infuence was remarkable.
