Here's the thing: my MC becomes a runway model, and she has to be over 5 foot 8 inches. But her love interest has to be taller than her. I guess it's tradition, and besides, it's easier when describing scenes (ie, "he rested his chin on top of her head", or "she stood on her tiptoes and kissed him on the cheek").
So what should be the appropriate height for a male? I'm thinking 5 foot 11, or is that too short?

5'10

I'm 6'0 and the majority of men are shorter than me. :(

Yeah, 5'10 is about right for average. Depends on race, too. But vastly more so on individual variations-which are wide.

5' 9" is the govt statistic for average height for american male. At 6'4" I can count the number of time's I've looked UP to talk to another male. Oddly enough, three of the people I know that ARE taller than me, are all named PHIL. What are the odds for that?

Funny thing is, to me - everyone is 'the same size' - That is - 'shorter than me'. I don't make much distinction between someone 5'9 or 5'3 or 6'0 - they are all the same size. And I'm hard pressed to recall someone's height.

(I once had a boss who suffered from the classic Napoleon complex, he was yelling at me and finally said "You think you're so superior, just cause you're taller than me!" I looked at him and said, "I'm taller than most everyone I meet, aside from making it harder to buy clothes, and constantly bumping my head, I don't give it much thought... to me, you're as short as everyone else I meet." I think he was about 5'3")

We're 11 feet tall, 450 pounds, drink gallons of the world's worst beer daily, and we weep bacon fat.

I'm 5'9" and the only people who can put their chin on my head are 6'3" and over. (My brother can do it, but not my 6'2" husband.)

That said, I've dated plenty of guys who were my height or shorter, and plenty of guys who were taller than me but shorter than 6'.

And I don't think romance heroines have to be waaay shorter than romance heroes, not to the point of having to stand on tiptoes to kiss them.

It doesn't really matter what the average height is. If you want him to be taller than her, just make him taller than average. My 17yo son is 6'5", so the tall teens do exist. That said, my nearly 6' daughter would happily date a guy shorter than her. You could make your MC open-minded about height -- or just plain fall madly in love with a shorter guy.

I'm just shy of 5' 7" and I'm something like 40th percentile, so 5'9"ish sounds about right.

I've heard their incredible height is actually a reason models find it hard to find a boyfriend despite their good looks.

...stupid tall people...

A casting director was complaining the other day about people fibbing on their resumes. Apparently for guys, '6 foot tall' is really anything over 5 foot 9 inches, and '5 foot 11 inches' is code for 'I'm way too short to get away with pretending that I'm 6 foot tall'.

She said that the particularly stupid thing is that it's the one thing on the resume that matters the least.

How come everybody here is so freaking tall?! I'm 5'6 and I always thought I was taller than the average woman. Now I come here and realize everybody who commented is taller than me! What gives?!

I'm female, 5'8" and always considered myself tall. But I think there's an age factor involved. I'm almost fifty and when I visit my son at college, it seems a lot more of the girls are at least my height.

In other words, when we define 'average height for men in the US', that's all men, all ages. I suspect 'average height for men in their twenties' is probably an inch or two taller than 'average height for men in their fifties'.

Obviously ancestry also makes a huge difference. Certain nationalities tend to be taller/shorter than average.

So make your boyfriend whatever height you need.

It depends on where in the country. I'm a 6'0" Minnesotan and I consider myself to be of average height. It was a shock to go to school in Maryland and suddenly be considered tall.

It's all relative. I'm 6' 1", and my brothers call me short-stuff. They are 6' 2", 6' 3", and 6' 4".

My girlfriend is 5' 8", was married to a fellow 5' 5", so she calls me her "tower guy."

Below average on all accounts.

5'11" would make the hero only marginally taller than her. She would likely not have to stand on tip toes to kiss his cheek, but he would have to in order to kiss the top of her head.

6'3" in the land of 5'8"

People as tall as I am (or even taller!) are quite a rarity, and it tends to take me by surprise when I don't have to look down at someone.

I'm also in Minnesota. My husband is 5'3" and I'm 5'2" and we call this place 'Land of the Giants.' The only place we find people our height in Minnesota is at the synagogue.

I'm female, 5'8" and always considered myself tall.

One of my best friends is 5'8" and considers herself short. But that's because she's German and lived most of her life in Germany. All her German friends are ridiculously tall. I think the tallest people in the world are probably the Germans, the Scandinavians, and the Masai.

If height is normally distributed on a bell curve, I'm right at the peak of average.

I'm about 5'10.

I'm 5'11" and I always feel like the tallest person in the room. I find a lot of men are shorter than I am...but most are about the same or taller. I would have guessed the male average to be 6'. Guess I overestimated. :)
