There's a lot of online publications (Flashquake, Microhorror, etc), but I've just realised that most one-page stories in magazines are flash fic too. Women's Weekly and its ilk pay up to £150 for 700 good words, which kind stunned me.

Problem is, I still struggle to use flashfic as anything other than a writing exercise; I do character vignettes and scene setting, but nothing with a real plot. I sent my only decent (cosy) flash ghost story for Flashes in the Dark, and most women's mags don't take reprints. Time to go and play with the challenges, I guess!

Flash Fic is tough. I struggle with it and can't seem to manage a good story under 100 words. But as you suggested, I think 1000 words still counts as flash fiction.

As the old saying goes, "If I had more time it'd have been shorter."

The thing about magazines is when they say 700 words or 1200, they mean those numbers and nothing in between (with the usually 10% each way, though at this length I wouldn't risk more than 5%). It's a challenging constraint, but challenges can be a source of inspiration!
