I'm trying to remember... about 3 years ago (?), there was a Publishers Weekly/Publishers Lunch report about a woman who got this ginormous advance in a bidding war for her book about how to farm and take care of all your own needs. At the time, I remember wanting to watch to see if her book ever became a hit. I suspect not, or I'd remember it, but I'd still like to look it up. Does anyone remember more details than I do about the author, title, etc.?

This also falls into an idea I have for an article: I'm thinking of doing an article for Writer's Digest about how high advances can curse the author. I've heard rumors about this, but don't know if there's hard evidence to back it up. Anyone else know about cases where an author got a very high advance, then the book didn't sell well and the author couldn't sell another book?

yawn... in da land of the terminally bored.
I seem to recall reading that the bidding war over Nicholas Sparks first novel garnered him a 7-figure advance. Wound up selling lottsa copies, too.

Better yet for him, it’s still in print.
