My friend lifted the hood of her car and found a pile of dog food inside. A mouse had been stealing it from the dog bowl and went out to the garage to stash it under the hood.

In my early 20s, I had a Grand Prix with some apparently desirable real estate as well - a squirrel built a nest inside the carbuerator. I don't remember how much it cost to have it fixed, but I do know the two guys who pushed my car out of the busy intersection (where it died) weren't too thrilled. :D

Speaking of smart, little critters... you'll love this video! (click the mouse in Video Highlights on the left hand side)

Someone has WAY too much time on their hands...I mean, how long did it take to train the mouse to do all that??

Pretty cool, though. And no nuts stashed under car hoods. :D

"Well, THERE's your problem, lady..."

A few years back I drove across town to a hardware store in a Ford Ranger pickup. I did my shopping and came back out to find one of our cats, underneath the truck, absolutely terrified. I don't know where the cat was when she took the ride, but it took a half hour to get her out from under the truck and inside for the ride home.

This doesn't involve critters making nests in vehicles, but a friend of my family used to have a dog that would frequently, as a matter of habit, take a nap with his head resting right behind the rear tire of the farm pickup. He got his HEAD run over several times when someone wasn't paying attention. Thank goodness the truck was always parked in a soft dirt driveway. The dog was never hurt; he just shook his head and ran off each time.

This was the same dog who got beaten up by a raccoon, kicked by a cow, and tangled in an electric fence. True story.

He died of natural causes at age 17.

And no, his name was not "Lucky". :tongue

We had squirrels doing that one year -- easy cure, put a handful of mothballs in a sock, tie securely, to a non-moving part. The smell will keep the storage crittrs out.

One winter, we had an outdoor cat who moved her kittens into the engine compartment of our car. Didn't realize it until we stopped for gas, and the things took off. One got its head caught underneath the door to the gas station.

All got home safely, but still concerns me when animals are around vehicles to this day...

At least she had a great attitude about it.
