View Full Version : Firebrand's Query Letter Holiday - submit first chapter instead!

Stew21
12-11-2008, 09:49 PM
December 15th through January 15th, they will not be accepting query letters. Instead they are accepting first chapters.
Even if you've submitted and been rejected previously, they will accept your first chapter.

Very cool. I submitted a query to them on Oct 31 and have heard absolutely nothing back. Also...I sent a follow-up, which they encourage you to do...and still heard nothing.

I will do this, though...I have a few finished novels in the hopper. I will just send a different one. Thanks for the heads up.

XXThey specify a Microsoft Word document (.doc). Works is a different and incompatible format. However, if you have Wordpad on your computer (Start>Programs>Accessories>Wordpad), you might be able to open the Works document and then save it as a Word format document. Wordpad uses the Word .doc format.

I don't think Wordpad will open Works files, but it will open an rtf (rich text file). So save it as an rtf in Works, open in Wordpad, and save as a doc.

Most places want rtf or doc format for submissions, so it's worth learning to convert your files.

OH, cool. I sent them a query back in July and never got a response. Now I can send a chapter. Coolness.

ETA: Oh, I just looked. I got a rejection in September. But I also think I've changed the first chapter up a bit since then.

By 'market' do you think they mean a book's target demographic or its genre or both?

HorsebackWriter

This is great! A little scary, too, because I never feel like I have the knack for query letters, which always leaves me wondering if my query is the cause of my rejections, instead of my writing.

It's a good way to find out.

KTC -- It took about three and a half months to hear back from Firebrand when I queried them previously, so, if you queried in October, you may not hear back until January-ish. Good luck!

Thank you both :D. I can also save it as a word document. Should i do that instead? It says Word 97-2003 (*.doc) ?
Only problem is, i'm not able to open it, because my trial for word has expired.

Well, don't laugh too hard, I went to a Writer's Conference were they held an 'Idol' contest. Everyone gave their first chapter and it was read outloud by a 3rd party. There were 6 agents sitting in the panel veto-ing every chapter after the first 1-2 sentences, unless they loved it. 4 lucky people got agents that day. I did not.
However, someone snuck in a chapter from Margaret Atwood The Handmaid's Tale and they veto-ed it after the first paragraph! So .... we all learned from that.

I sent my first chapter in on Jan 13 (my first novel FINISHED about one hour before I submitted the first chapter!) and was surprised how exciting it is to SUBMIT for the first time. I don't think it will be too hard for them to get through the subs. I met her at a workshop and the agents do just go by the first few lines before they decide to trash it or keep reading on.
I learned a lot from that workshop. How the first lines have to really grip the reader and be original. Nothing that starts with a convo in a bar, car or just waking up and opening your eyes. Hey I'm just repeating what I learned from the panel of agents that day.
But maybe I have not learned enough as I have not yet heard back either.

Just in case you didn't see this update:

Thank you for making our first annual Query Holiday such a success. We received over 3,750 sample chapters from prospective clients and we're (happily and) busily reading! Because we received more samples than we had been expecting (yay!) we kindly request that you allow us to take until February 15th to respond to the submissions we're interested in. And... as mentioned below... we will not be contacting the authors of samples that we are not interested in. We apologize, but there is much reading to do - and we need to focus our time on that and not managing a deluge of emails. Again, thank you for your submissions. The Firebrand Submission System will be back online and accepting queries as of February 15th

If I get a request, I'm ready. If I don't, (don't you hate it when the present version of your work is better than a version subbed out two months previous?) then my manuscript is ready for querying, which, in itself, is also very exciting. I bit the bullet last month and wrote a query letter, anyway. It's almost ready to go.

When I saw new additions to this thread, I felt happy thinking someone was posting that they'd received a request.

Nadia just twittered that they have finished reviewing all the QH samples, but have not yet sent out all the requests yet. They'll have them all out by the 15th. Keep an eye on your inbox if you submitted!

According to Nadia, they've requested 100 fulls. I wonder how many more they have left to request...

Hmmph! *Flounces* It looks like I'll have to take my genius elsewhere...like Pizza Hut Publishing, for example. :D

I had the feeling from Nadia's most recent twitter that QH was over. But maybe it's still going on.

If it is over, I, too, will bring my genius elsewhere. : )
