That's a start. I'm primarily looking for rough equivalents for shit, damn, and hell, i.e.,

shit - oh no! Really, really oh no. As in, "hit! The reactor is about to blow."

damn - a 'level one' curse. As in, "Damn you!"

hell - the place you damn one to. As in, "Go to hell."

But others will do nicely as well.

I had a Filipino dude being rude - eyeing me up & down & being super sleazy. I said :
"Na bong set na boto mong." (your dick stinks)

Shut him right up. As a matter of fact, he apologized to me for years. He must have thought I understood what he said :D

eta: I believe okaninam (sp) is F#$K

Erp.

Polynesian refers to an entire group of languages.

Palauan is a Micronesian language; it, like Filipino, is completely unrelated to Polynesian languages--which include Hawaiian, Māori, Tahitian, Samoan, and Tongan.

Don't assume (though it may be the case) that English curse patterns/obscenity rules apply to other languages.

Sorry - once again, I prove to be no help. Here's what I got: "There are some but they are curse words in the other sense of the word "curse" (as in "I put a curse on you") and I wouldn't want to tell you or anyone else.

Pulukeke is bullshit, it's not ancient but a transliteration of bullshit.

My nieces 1st language was Hawaiian - shes a Sr this year. She's gotta have some good ones or adaptations. I'm waiting to hear back from her. I'll let you know.:D

eta - okay - this just in :kanapapiki - son of a bitch or bastard..

When it comes to curses as cursing--English mostly lost that, though there are some signs that early Germanic languages had actual curses, rather than "rude and insulting words and phrases," which is mostly what we have now.

There are curses in Old Irish that well, we know that they are curses because of the verb, but we don't actually know what they really mean--they're too awful, apparently, for the scribes to have really fully recorded them!

I would argue that polynesia includes not only one group of languages but several. If you want to use anything close to appropriate you need to specific both nationality and time period--at the very least. IMHO.

Thanks guys. Been off site for the weekend recharging the batteries.

Yes, Polynesian is an entire group of languages that are closely related but by no means equivalent. I had also read that they don't really swear the way we do. Nor the Japanese. Must be nice. Maybe go with a slightly different tack here.
