Does any one know why so many agents rep literary fiction?

First I have no idea where to put this question.

Second as I am searching through lists of agents I find that a huge number represent literary fiction. Now that's fine, I love the stuff myself. For awhile I didn't think anything of it, then I remembered/saw several comments on the reality of literary fiction - it just doesn't pay in the high amounts. Well, not until you get the invite to Sweden.

So I was wondering why do so many agents want to represent a genre with a relatively small return to it?

I think the answer is that perhaps these myths about "literary fiction" just aren't true. There are plenty of novels considered "literary" that sell big. A lot of people buy it.
